CSIS Briefs: The Escalating Terrorism Problem in the United States. Jones, S., Doxsee, C., Harrington, N. (2020, July 09)
The CSIS briefs article focuses on assessing the increasing terrorism menace in the United States. It states that the United States is facing increasing terrorism that is likely to degenerate (Jones et al., 2020). Serious threats emanate from radicals and religious fanatics. This essay assesses the CSIS article and suggests measures that can combat terrorism.
The CSIS brief focuses on explaining major terrorism threats faced by the United States and their impact on the country. It analyzes data on a myriad of terrorist attacks and plans on the U.S. from 1994 to May 2020 and their linked fatalities (Jones et al., 2020). Right-wing security threats have been identified to increase in the last six years, whereby they are associated with more than a half of all attacks since 2019, and 90% of attacks in 2020 (Jones et al., 2020). Terror activities linked to right-wing terrorism include racial and ethnic related violence and government opposition related uprisings. The upcoming presidential elections might cause an increase in terrorist attacks where extremists are expected to turn to chaos and destruction of property, depending on the polls' aftermath.
In June 2020, authorities apprehended three individuals linked to the ‘Boogaloo’ movement preparing for civil war and causing chaos (Jones et al., 2020). Previously, other white supremacists of the ‘Ku Klux Klan’ had attacked mass protesters by driving into them. Social media has also been characterized by extremists sharing conspiracy theories, and inciting violence following the killing of George Floyd (Jones et al., 2020). The article also focuses on how religious networks pose a security threat to the United States (Jones et al., 2020). At the global level, terrorism should be combated through strengthening multilateralism and worldwide coordination and cooperation of different security agencies in intelligence gathering and sharing. Severe and intense terrorist attacks can adversely affect the American economy and general ways of life, such as education, since people will live in fear and terror. Through intense international intelligence gathering and sharing, terrorist activities can be mitigated; terrorists will get apprehended before conducting their heinous acts.
In conclusion, terrorist threats are on the rise as a dynamic number of groups and networks exploit new global trends, although it is likely to degenerate. Nonetheless, the U.S. remains vigilant in eliminating terrorist's ability to threaten America, its interests, and its engagement with the world. Terrorist activities can be mitigated through multilateralism and worldwide coordination and cooperation of different security agencies.
