Gender communication is a specialization in the field of communication that has its focus on the ways we communicate with one another as gendered beings. It shows how individuals of different genders are represented in the entire history. It is considered to be of importance to have an understanding of which script to use accurately with the respect to the relationship one has with the other person. A variety of channels of communication is used in passing information from one person to another. It is very crucial to have awareness on of how one should communicate with others depending on the gender. The reason for the mentioned knowledge is that members of both sexes possess different innate ways of expressing themselves.
Observation of the gender patterns especially in talking, it is noted that people view their different ways of speaking to be a natural behavior. The patterns of speech are assumed to be automatic. There is a dramatic difference in the communication styles used by both men and women. Women tend to prefer using a language that is indirect than that of their counterparts. The intonation of the speaker as well as their pitch will in most cases differentiate the gender of the speaker. Culture is also an important factor in a determination of the use of voice (Barret & Davidson, 2006). Research findings have found that women tend to make their statements to be like questions by an addition of declarative answers that is done by addition of no or yes type of rising intonations. Women use a language that is highly polite, and this may be through the usage of more words. Also, women tend to avoid the use of definitive statements in most of their conversations. On the hand, the language of the male has been assumed to be absolute. Research has also established that men do talk more in a conversation as compared to women; they can quickly interrupt a conversation. Men have also been found and associated with the use of speech in an establishment of status as well as the superiority hierarchy. In most cases men are more comfortable in delivering of speeches and giving advice than receiving information. In the role of information conveyance females are always less comfortable, they talk with an aim of connecting while men talk to inform, and their communication is direct making the speaker appear to be self-confident.
Culture, as well as social norms, can have a significant influence on both the identity of gender expressions and the nature of the interactions between the sexes involved. The differences in cultures have an impact in the way the genders carry out their communications. The difference is often inculcated noted to during the period of childhood (Barret & Davidson, 2006). The games played by children have an enormous contribution to how the children will socialize into both feminine and masculine cultures. These differences brought about as kids make most women to operate from assumptions on communication, usage of rules for communication and use of standards in communication that are significantly different from those that are endorsed by men. In the conservative settings, male and female do their interactions with people of the same gender in a variety of ways. Friendship is built based on mutual support as well as interests that are common between them.
Most organizations are trying their best in ensuring there is equality in how men and women communicate at their workplace. This is done by the creation of an understanding of the different styles of communication brought to the place of work by various genders. In most cases men and women differ in the process of making decisions affecting the leadership strategies of the organization. Their leadership styles and attitudes towards different tasks assigned to them at their workplace have been found differing. At the workplace, communications are expected to be done via open meetings, emails; they are projected to be one on one as well as making presentations. In spite of these formal frameworks, the techniques of passing information are unique to each gender. For the mentioned variation, training should be carried out to ensure there is competence, and also the foster understanding of the behavioral characteristics of both sexes in a communication context.
Determination of the best way to use in communicating with others is paramount as it will enhance understanding between individuals. The way people address each other while in a group is different from how they will address each other at personal levels. A significant difference has thus been noted in the styles used in communication for both male and women. Culture is also considered to have a major influence on how people communicate with each other. The way individuals interact with others will also affect their communication patterns. At the workplace, communication is also expected to take different trends. Men will tend to handle issues differently from their female counterparts.
