Gun control background
The United States of America has seen serious cases of firearms violence in history. Over the past years, there have been several cases of mass shootings in schools, churches, shopping malls, hotels and the Universities in America. The following are some of the examples of the deadliest cases of mass shootings in the American history;
On February 14, 2018- a 19-year-old former student, Nicholas Cruz, opened a hail of gunfire at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High school in Parkland, Florida. About 17 adults and several children died in the incident (Cook, Philip J, and Kristin A. Goss. 78).
On November 5, 2017 - a man is known as Devin Patrick Kelly opened gunfire at the church in Sutherland Springs, Texas, 25 people died and about 20 others escaped with bullet injuries.
There have been renewed demands for stricter firearms control in the United States of America as a result of the past shootings in schools. Various proposals have been made in an attempt to halt the incidence. The following are some of the proposed measures;
The ban on the weapons
The semi-automatic weapon which includes the AR-15-style which was allegedly used by Nikolas Cruz for the mass shootings in Parkland, Florida School were already banned by the United States Congress and was sign into law by President Bill Clinton. The law prohibited the making and sale of weapons for the civilian use and also put limits to the use of large-capacity magazines. The ban, however, came to a lapse in the year 2004 after the failure of the various efforts to renew the ban by the National Rifle Association.
Gun shows
Gun shows are normally carried out in the various armories, large arenas, civic centers, and fairgrounds. Apart from the gun shows, there is also the sale of those guns, knives, ammunition and the military books. Most of the US gun shows are attended to by as many people as 15,000 over two days.
Arming teachers
Following the cases of gunfire by students in schools, it would be the best option to arm teachers with guns at school due to the following reasons; The United States schools occasionally face gun violence, vandalism, and robbery (Christopher, 42). Additionally, teachers should learn how to wield guns so they may help deter the cases of gun violence by the students while in schools. The children themselves have guns. It would not be reasonable that teachers don't have guns, suppose there is an outbreak of gun violence, they would come in and help stop its consequences.
The teachers are responsible for protecting students at the school. In case of a major attack in the school, such as terrorist attack, the armed teachers will be in a position to put things under control. Apart from protecting students, teachers also have a right to defend themselves from the gun violence suppose it happens in school.
Federal laws
The US gun laws and policies control the possession, transfer, manufacture, and use of the small arms by the civilians. There are 20,000 gun laws which are found in numerous federal statutes. The federal laws regulate the trade, manufacture, possession, record keeping, transfer and destruction of ammunition, firearms and the accessories. These laws are monitored and reinforced by the US Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.
Right to bear arms
According to the Second Amendment of the Constitution of the United States, " The people of the United States of America have the right to keep and bear arms."
