Uber is an international ride-hailing organization that offers services like food delivery, ride services, and other related services all over the world (Chin, 2018). The organization's head offices are situated in San Fransisco, California, in the United States of America. Hence, this paper discusses the current status of the organization and the culture related problems since Kalanick's temporary leave and on the strategies to revive uber to where it was financially.
1. What are two of the related cultural issues discussed in the Washington post article? If uber was doing so well economically as a "startup," company, do you think there should have been an urgency to change the culture? why or why not?
The organization has been having a reputation problem over several issues and cases of sexual harassment over its past culture and the collecting of fares even when there is a taxi strike (Chin, 2018). In the polls on Uber's metrics that were carried out by both the external polling firms and the internal monitoring devices have also come out with the same statements over uber's cultural problems of not paying off.
Therefore, there is a need for uber to revamp its brand and reputation to revive back the organization to where it was for its future success. Hence the organization's brand headache makes it difficult for its fast progress as a public company, following that it is at $55 billion worth, which is more than 40% below the targeted price before it came to the public. Therefore there is a high pressure from the investors from the quarterly loss of $ 5.2 billion that was reported in August, which was the highest ever to be recorded by uber.
Uber also has the problem of relying on the customer email assessments and the in-app questionnaires that assist the organization in measuring the level of trust among the consumers (Chin, 2018). Hence this reliance needs to be changed since it led to the decline of its reputation during the #deleteUber fallout as there was adverse publicity that swarmed from the striking drivers. Thus making uber to get itself with its rival Lyft, therefore, creating the state of being aware of the poor working conditions and low payoffs to divers, which frustrated IPO and hence leading to significant losses as from the media coverage. Hence the need for the change in how uber addressed its issues.
Based on the article and the letter to Uber employees, do you believe former CEO and co-founder Travis Kalanick should return? Why or why not? If you support Kalanick's return, consider and outline at least two potential consequences of him returning. If not, what do you believe the future for uber will be if their culture and company do not change?
Following the current situation and brand name of uber in the market, Kalanick needs to return (Cook, Patel & O'Rourke, 2018). in solving cases of ethics and leadership, such as discrimination and sexual harassment. Since the board of directors of the organizations has already voted to take the necessary measures and adopt all the recommendations from the report of the attorney general? Furthermore, Kalanick will be having the responsibility of ensuring there is team leadership through empowerment and in doing decisive acts in running the company forward. There is also a need to hold all the leaders accountable regarding the complaints from the employees and with the metrics tied to diversity.
