Fitzgeralds novel, The Great Gatsby is a classic novel that was published in 1925. The novel tells the story of Jay Gatsby with the storyline being narrated by Nick Carraway. The book espouses a wide range of themes, which are developed through the interactions between different characters. Jay Gatsby is a dubious character in the novel who lives a mysterious lifestyle as a millionaire. He has shady business connections and lives a luxurious life throwing lavish parties for his friends, most of which he does not attend. Nevertheless, he exemplifies many themes that the author, Fitzgerald, seeks to put across. For example, the main theme in the story is that time is irreversible. Gatsby had spent most of his youthful years as a military officer during the World War I. it was during these years that he met and fell in love with Daisy Fay Buchanan. However, after several years since their encounter, Gatsby is still nostalgic about their youthful love. He hopes to see Daisy one day in his life. Besides, the main reason he holds several parties in his home is so that Daisy may one day appear at one of the parties.

The element of time plays a critical role in the life of Gatsby. He spent most of his time chasing one dream that epitomizes his entire life. Furthermore, it is the illusion that he had of his future that also makes time very important in his life. He comes out as a victim of his past memoirs. For instance, his desire to rekindle the life he had in the past by renewing the relationship he had with Daisy turns out to be tragic as he is eventually killed in the process. As Nick elaborates, "Almost five years! There must have been moments even that afternoon when Daisy tumbled short of his dreams - not through her own fault, but because of the colossal vitality of his illusion". His focus on the past events in his life causes him to waste significant amount of time in his present life, oblivious of the fact that it is impossible to rewind time. His main dream in life was to make a part of his past a major part of his future, which ultimately failed. His life was mainly based on two options, either to "...suck on the pap of life, gulp down the incomparable milk of wonder," or to Kiss Daisy. He opted for the second option, which, in his view, was the most important dream.

In conclusion, the life of Gatsby points to the fact that time is very important in ones life. It is a psychological, philosophical, and physical concept that can either hamper or help one to achieve his goals and dreams. When one wastes their lives, it can be very difficult for them to achieve their dreams in the future. The life of Jay Gatsby reminds us of the significance of seizing the moment and achieving ones dreams by focusing on the present t build a bright future. The tragic end of Gatsbys life indicates what can likely happen when one spends all his or her resources chasing the wrong dream or trying to rewind time.
