Introduction
Improving patient outcomes depends on several aspects, such as formulating a question oriented to determining and finding an answer. Developing the question should be made to enable quick and easy retrieval of answers (Stillwell et al., 2010). Since the late 1990s, the opioid epidemic has brought several challenges, and it has not got any better. Since it spiraled out of control, CDC estimates the total number of victims who die from an opioid overdose to be around 130 daily (Ryan & Dunne, 2018). Even though the epidemic continues to grow, some aspects, such as the use of Narcan, could assist in curbing the fatal overdoses. The use of Narcan is efficient since it does not require medical training. The use of Narcan reverses the deadly effects attributed to opioids. Due to this, I chose my question: (P) among opioid addicts, the ones who (I) receive and use Narcan compared to who (C) do not access to Narcan at the face of (O) a fatal overdose when they use opioids.
Search Terms and Databases
Various databases were employed, such as PubMed, Ebsco, and Medline, while conducting my research question. The terms used in the search were naloxone or Narcan, opioids, overdose, addicts, and opioid overdose prevention.
Search Results
The search resulted in multiple articles that totaled 6. I refined the search per the generic term naloxone by replacing Narcan. The name Narcan had resulted in more than 5,000 articles. Incorporating the words, naloxone, or Narcan in preventing opioid overdose in the search resulted in 774 articles. I used some of the peer-reviewed articles.
Conclusion
The strategies oriented to increasing the effectiveness and rigor of a database search is focusing on and using more databases. Using the right database fitting the best match is critical (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2011).
