In my own point of view, inclusion is a key element that creates and good relationship between individuals and creates a harmonious understanding in a societal setting. Thus, I believe through inclusion, individuals of different calibers are presented with equal opportunities that may arise in the community. Moreover, inclusivity helps individuals to live their best lives despite having limitations like being disabled. This paper aims to discuss inclusion from my own point of view and the impact of inclusion on people with disabilities, especially students.
In my opinion, according to the various encounters with families of people with disabilities that I have encountered in my profession, most of the members have difficulty affording the individual's cost of care. Other family members become stressed due to the lack of the required care for the individual. Therefore, inclusion, especially in learning institutions and other social groups comes in handy for individuals. The inclusion thus eases the stress that the close family member could have incurred.
In my profession as a teacher, I witnessed the impact of inclusion on my learners who have various types of disabilities. My two students Liam and Chrystal of grade four are a clear example since they were part of an inclusion program in the school, their parents were at some point so worried about their ability to catch up in class. Liam had cerebral palsy while Chrystal was diagnosed with Down syndrome at a very tender age. Since both cerebral palsy and Down syndrome are regarded as an intellectual disability, the parents of both students were worried about the performance of their children. However, with time the parents cleared their doubts since the impact of the inclusion program on the children was great.
In the two case examples of Liam and Chrystal who were my students the inclusion program gave the children a sense of belonging, and thus they did not feel alone anymore in the journey. Thus the impact of the inclusion was seen in the improvement of the performance of the children. Liam and Chrystal began to be positive about their statuses, and this impacted positively their lives since they felt that they were more appreciated in the school community.
As the school's inclusion committee was being formed, they included me since, in my class, I had students with disability; therefore, I was relevant in the committee to share my experiences. In the committee, other teachers, staff, and I were given the task of identifying the differences between individuals who have a disability and evaluating specific strategies on how to incorporate them into the learning system. Moreover, we aimed at listening to the student's needs and identifying how well the inclusion program would assist the students in the learning process. The task of the committee also proceeded to evaluate the relevance of the inclusion program in the targeted student's welfare.
In my opinion, the inclusion program is relevant, especially to the schooling children as witnessed in my own student's case that is Liam and Chrystal. The inclusion eased their parents' worry that their children would not comprehend anything in class and also in the students themselves in identifying their differences due to their intellectual condition thus boosting their confidence and their overall performance in class. Moreover, the extra cost that the parents of such students could incur is eliminated since the inclusion program covers it all.
