Multi-protocol technology has been around for several years. In IP forwarding, the network packets use the routing algorithm to determine the next outgoing link. Unfortunately, this algorithm uses the longest prefix of an IP destination address therefore introducing latency in the process (Rajput, 2019). This process has to be repeated for each packet even when they have the same destination, therefore causing further delays. To reduce the latency, a short label is attached to a packet and is updated at every hop. The label is used to determine the outgoing link and a new label is attached for the next hop. This technology results to high speeds and allows for low-cost hardware implementation. It also allows for flexibility in the management of traffic flows.

Network Function Virtualization (NFV)

https://ieeexplore.ieee.org/document/8840383

Network function virtualization (NFV) is a relatively new technology used to develop a new generation of network services. Traditionally, network functions were realized using dedicated network hardware. This was very expensive to buy and upgrade the network hardware. NFV provides a new way to deploy and manage network services. It allows for network functions to be implemented as software in commodity servers (Eramo et al., 2019). Also, network functions can be easily created and manipulated with minimal restrictions while allowing for scalability. This drastically lowers the cost of setting up and maintaining network hardware. NFV is also beneficial to the users as they can choose virtualized network functions from different sellers of their choice.

(VPN)

VPN stands for virtual private network. It is a network that maintained the security of private networks while using public network paths. It is a cost-effective way to implement security for networks (Pudelko et al., 2020). There are four categories of VPNs; trusted, secure, hybrid and provider-provisioned VPN. Trusted VPN is when a client uses leased circuits to avoid interruption during communication. However, this is not a secured VPN. Secure VPN encrypts and decrypts information on both ends to ensure that data is not accessed by unauthorized people. Corporations often use this to avoid private and sensitive data from leaking. Hybrid VPN combines both the properties of a trusted and secure VPN. The service provider ensures that there is no interruption and the clients take care of the security of the VPN. Lastly, provider-provisioned VPN is one that is controlled by the vendor.

Software-Defined Networking (SDN)

https://ieeexplore.ieee.org/document/9151385

Software-defined networking (SDN) represents the technologies that promote virtualization of networking devices (Raja et al., 2020). Initially, networking was prominent with hardware devices which are expensive to run and inflexible. Networking devices were transformed to software which brought the SDN technology. SDN technology is cost-effective and allows for automation and simplification of processes. It also enables network to customized within a short time frame and for a specific service that is intended. SDN is built with three main principles. First, is the disengagement of physical and virtual layers making them independent of each other. Second, is adapting the system to use the software. Finally, is automating the management and control operations. SDN has grown to become a reliable networking technology and its market will continue to grow in the future.

5G for Branch Office Connectivity

https://ieeexplore.ieee.org/document/9139040

The interest in 5G broadband service has been increasing every year and is expected to change connectivity. 4G is able to match the speeds and bandwidth of fixed line solutions in a cost-effective way. 5G will exceed fixed line capabilities and offer new opportunities for companies and stores with many branches.

Companies with multiple branches need internet to allow for easy communication among them. 5G will not only offer consistent connections in branch offices but also complete reliability (Obiodu & Sastry, 2020). Also, in offices and retail stores that offer customer Wi-Fi, having 5G will improve the customer service experience. 5G is set to drastically change branch networking and optimize performance at a low cost.
