The Thin documentary is a film/movie that addresses the effects of eating disorders, commonly known as anorexia. Anorexia is characterized by loss of weight or fear of gaining weight and bad eating habits such as dieting, purging, and excessive exercise just to lose weight. Thin documentary film/movie states that estimated 5 million people in the United States die from eating disorders. It further states that one out seven women suffering from anorexia ends up dying from the illness (msali16., (2012). The film/movie illustrates how such people in society should be taken care of. It provides channels such as medical treatment, nutritional counseling, and therapy which includes; individual therapy, family therapy and the controlled group therapy from people suffering from the same illness. The film is however biased to the extent that it specifically addresses one gender, the female, without teaching about the other gender and how to deal with them.
Thin documentary film/movie connects with the class topics and discussions of addiction and obsession. The documentary talks about eating disorders which are described as an addiction to a substance or food. With regards to my personal life, it addresses the issues of bad habits we develop that eventually end up to be addictive. The extreme desire to be thin and the bad eating habits could be detrimental to our health.
Lessons learned from Thin documentary film/movie are the types of eating disorders and their effects and symptoms as already discussed in the class topics and discussions. Eating disorders include; anorexia, where people avoid eating or starve to lose weight or for fear of gaining weight, bulimia which is excessive purging and binge eating disorder which involves overeating. The symptoms of eating disorders include; low heart rate, hair loss, liver damage and dehydration (msali16., (2012). People suffering from eating disorders are always depressed and severely suffer from peer pressure. The high mortality rate is always as a result of suicide as demonstrated by the Thin documentary film. Most of the patients have tried committing suicide. The recommended treatment for the eating disorder is medical treatment, nutritional counseling, and group therapy.
In as much as the film educates about the effects of eating disorders, it does not give a satisfactory solution to the patients. At the end of the documentary, it is clear that most of the patients have not recovered from the disorder and still determined to commit suicide as a solution to their problems. I would, however, recommend it to future classes. It is educative as to the effects and treatment of the eating disorder. It may also discourage some students from adopting such habits of eating disorders such as starving to lose weight, purging and overeating (msali16., (2012).
