Olson, Martha, And Jim Klein. Taken for A Ride. 1996
Taken for a Ride was intended to intervene in policies and trends of American life. It is in a documentary form that investigates a range of social challenges affecting United States citizens and the causes. It highlights how the American people depended entirely on motor vehicles and the subsequent failure by the system of public transport to fulfill this need. The documentary highlights the underlying problems in projects at General Motors to intertwine American life with her interests.
The documentary falls into two sections. The first part covers the role played by General Motors in dismantling of streetcars in the years between 1930 and 1940. The documentary borders on the argument highlighted by Congressman Bradford Snell in 1974, that General Motors hatched a scheme in collaboration with the National City Lines bus company to dismantle streetcar systems and replace and bring buses as a replacement. Snell observes that the act was intended to push more people into acquiring cars because boarding on buses was viewed as a poor alternative.
The second part highlights the story of how the highway lobby under the stewardship of General Motors advocated for policies towards the building of freeways and highways. It was realized that the implementation of these projects was detrimental to life in the city, and they were not in the interest of the nation. As it ends, the documentary shows how many cities have failed to serve the citizens who need the services. Taken for a Ride covers a significant topic in the history of public transport in the United States and covers it in totality.
