Introduction

Cardiac catheterization is the inserting of a catheter into an artery or vein, from a jugular or groin access point, leading to the heart. The umbilical vessels may also help do the same. Such a procedure is p on both interventional and diagnostic reasons (Schwarz, 2018; Saugel et al., 2017).

Background

Complications due to cardiac catheterization among adults are today a global concern, putting pressure on the existing healthcare systems (Bolli, 2019; Cowan, 2016). The effect occurs in both the developed and developing nations. The American Heart Association (AHA) records that averagely 1 in 5 adults above 40 years suffer from the disease, with the prevalence rate of about 4.7 million (Heggie, 2016; Mayer, 2020).

According to Widimsky and Widimsky (2020), nurses' roles involve preparing patients, aiding with the procedure, and removing the femoral sheaths following an operation. It also consists of conducting hemostasis, identifying any complications, and immobilization of any affected limb. They also help patients in any need for emotional support, patient education, and ensuring the patients (Nicholls, 2020; Corcos, 2019; Balikci et al., 2020). The nurses must have advanced knowledge and understanding of cardiac catheterization to allow them to handle any procedural complications (Melly et al., 2018; Van Tiggelen, 2016). An educational program on nurse's knowledge concerning complications of cardiac catheterization among adults is, therefore, essential in ensuring appropriate inpatient and outpatient care effectively and rapidly (Mohan, 2020; Sommer et al., 2018).

Literature Review

According to Xenogiannis et al. (2019) and Chandrasekar et al. (2001), there is a significant increase in the number of cardiac catheterization procedures annually. Complications due to cardiac catheterization among adults are also a common phenomenon today. Health care providers need knowledge of cardiac catheterization. Therefore, this educational program is appropriate in improving the nurse's experience in managing patients with heart failure. Maor et al. (2017) noted that nurses should join in special training to elevate their skills and train and educate patients about the complication (Jambure & Nagre, 2016; Patel et al., 2019). Countries with such education programs have recorded a reduced number of infections annually.

Importance

Nurses specialize in working with those undergoing cardiac procedures in a catheterization lab (Paganin et al., 2017; Szerlip et al., 2020). Their primary role is to assist the doctors with the catheterization process. They examine and monitor patients ahead of the process, administer the drugs, and help the medical team with any need during the actual procedure. Therefore, they need this education to enable them to perform their work effectively and efficiently (Johnson et al., 2017 and Salman et al., 2020).

Methodology

This study aims to assess an educational program's effectiveness on nurses 'snurses' knowledge concerning cardiac catheterization complications among adults (Atmowardoyo, 2018). The study also aimed to determine the effect of educational program on nursing by comparing the scores before and after the test on the knowledge the nurses had concerning heart failure management (QueirĂłs et al., 2017). The appropriate methodology is a quasi-experimental (pre-post-test) design for both the sample under study and the controlled groups (Kim & Maxwell 2017). Purposive sampling helped identify the nurses under test, with those under investigation put to the test, while the control group is not. Both descriptive and inferential data analysis methods will analyze the data collected (Rahi, 2017).

Conclusion

The prevalence rate for complications due to cardiac catheterization among adults in Pakistan has significantly decreased (Gaziano et al., (2010), Maves et al., 2017). In a study that involved coronary and pulmonary angiography performed on adult patients, complications were recorded in 9 patients, representing 3.6%, while no complication was registered among 250 patients, representing 96.5% (Sidhu et al., 2019). Complications like failure to deploy, expiry, ventricular fibrillation, cardiac tamponade, inability to cross the lesion, and stent damage were only found in one case, representing 0.4% (Khan et al., 2016, Gumilang et al., 2019).
