In the early 1940s, the cinematography was an art that was typically applied in the movies, and in cinemas to illuminate certain aspects of the community or the society in filmmaking. Though it was not a commonly used style of art in the film and movie industry, this saw the emergence of the film noir which came to be the style in the filming industry. The method of noir was as a result of a significant influence of the German Expressionism which was primarily identified by its aesthetics of darkness and the compositions. Film Noir made use of these specific elements in filmmaking for the creation of a sense of fear, mistrust, dark pessimism, and in summary to express insecurity which was a big issue at that time in the American history. Cinematography greatly utilized film Noir as a way to show the harsh culture of the Americans, it was a time when the American culture was transformed because of the darkness and horrors of the World War II. So to express the aspect of darkness in the film, se7en was set in at a time when violence was rampant and s the characters had to be morally ambiguous who battled violence and crimes in a fictional landscape in the urban setting. The art of cinematography applied in the film was a representation of the society reflecting the post-war effects, showing a damaged world with the attributes of moral anarchistic.

E. Williams, D. (2017). Flashback: Seven - The American Society of Cinematographers.

The film has been set on contrasting shadows, lighting in low-key, and dark plots. They are applied to express the theme of moral decay in modern society and at that time. The subject of moral decay is evident in the film with the murderers. There are several scenes of violence and violent acts of sin in every corner of the streets. The views of violence are all set to express the nature and culture of American society at that time. It was a dark time which was mostly characterized by violence and sinning which was very rampant at that time. The se7en movie is seemingly cast in a bleak, dirty urban unknown city, and a highly infested crime setting that is focused by use of silhouettes, chiaroscuro lighting, and the aspects of contrasting shadows. They are all a reflection of how the morals of the people are a decay, and also to show a sense of desolation and despair. Again, the ideology of an unknown city in the casting of the film portrays a scary scene since it a reflection of a nightmare. Crime is sited in almost every corner of the town; flooding's of garbage in the city, decayed moral, and the representation of all these immorality presented in the same way.

SCHUTZE, S., TASCHEN, B., & CARAVAGGIO, M. M. D. (2015). Caravaggio: the complete works. Koln, Taschen.

The cinematography is evidently in the use of the low-key lightning that is all across the whole set of the film. For instance, some apartments and buildings have boarded up windows, rooms which lack light but only from a torchlight by the detectives, or by lights coming from cracks through the walls, thus presenting a contrasting image. The use of different imagery I the scenes of the films were used to reflect the confliction of aspects that are evident in every person. The method of low lightening again is a way to bring out the element of unease or tension, which a creative setting as it presents a brilliant basis for the presentation that dark story scenes are to follow. The use of chiaroscuro lights is often used together with obstructions like rails or bars that assist in the framing of the morality and foreshadowing of the characters of their fates. The other bit of the film set is by the use of the obscured rainfall which is commonly used to emphasize the aspects conflicted way of emotions, and by creating an atmosphere of hopelessness which day by day blends into each other.

KEATING, P. (2014). Cinematography. New Brunswick, New Jersey, Rutgers Univ. Press.

The iconic characters in the se7en are presented to be dressed in a fedora hat, suits, and trench coats. The film cinematography emphasizes the use of low-key lights and contrasting shadows with the characters to bring out the theme of moral decay and darkness in the urban setting. Some of the characters are presented to be murderers in the film, the city is shown without a name and thus signifying as a state of nightmare and fear. It so makes it easy for acts of violence and murder to prevail in the urban areas. The contrasting blurry imagery with the scenes of rain in the film presents a hopeless situation and also an excellent chance for violence and sinful activities to take place in the movie. The cinematography is used symbolically to express some aspects with the characters and also to showcase specific themes that are evident in the society at that time. The film was set at a time when violence which had eroded the culture of many people at that time.
