Freight management or air cargo management is any property, mail, stores, or passenger luggage transported by an aircraft. Most of airline companies observe their market shares at all times for gap identification. The observation helps them to increase their value in the aviation industry and the aviation industry and, in turn, increase the revenue that they earn every financial year. Before the airlines determine market shares in the aviation industry, they must have accurate information about how their businesses are performing. Determining market shares for any airline business requires the right level of air freight management to know the precise details of what the market needs (Forsyth, 2016).
For the cargo coming in at the Changi airport in Singapore, they had a 1.4 percent increase of freight coming in totaling to 2 million tons in 2018, having an average of over 5800 tons in a year. For the year, the top five markets for cargo in Singapore were China, Hong Kong, and the United States. Being one of the busiest airports in the world, Changi Airport is the right place for plane spotting. The main cargo that Changi handles is perishables, pharmaceuticals, and cargo from e-commerce.
China Airlines carried out imports and exports at Changi airport, summing to 210 000 tons worth of perishables, mail, and other goods. This market share was at 10.5% of the tons arriving at Changi Airport (Wei & Liao, 2016). The type of airline used is known as Boeing 747-100 CK287 China cargo plane that flew from Shanghai to Changi airport in Singapore. The total carrying capacity of the aircraft is at 100 tones per flight, which means in a year it handled at least 210 trips worth of goods (Wei & Lao, 2016).
FedEx airlines who are known for exporting and carrying mail and other time-sensitive shipments. It is the largest express transportation company, as labeled by the Changi Airports Group (CAG). FedEx operates between the United States and other parts of the world, exporting and importing cargo. In the year 2018, it was able to carry 250, 000 tons of cargo to and from Singapore through the Changi airport at 12.5% (Oum & Yu, 2019). The flight that used during that time was the Boeing 777-200LR/F to Singapore's various airports. The cargo-carrying capacity of this flight is at 347.45 tons per flight, with 27 standard pallets. These numbers show that per year it handled 720 trips of goods in Singapore
Cathay pacific airlines based in Hong Kong, China, had a chunk among the top five flights that made Changi Airport hold 2 million tons in 2018. Changi Airport awarded Cathay Pacific airports for having one of the then-highest tons of cargo transported. It brought 400 000 tons at Changi airport at 20% while being led by Singapore airline groups (Graham, 2018). The flight used was Boeing 787-10 100 tons per flight, which carried at least 700 trips per week.
Singapore Airlines groups, which is in the home country of Singapore, had the leading number of cargo loaded at Changi Airports. It had 1.2 million tons worth of goods at the airport at 60% of the market share. The name was a drop as compared to the previous year's fiscal performance (Chang, Lee & Wu, 2019). The cargo plane was Boeing 747-400 craft and had a freight capacity of 112 trips per year (Vancroonenburg, Verstichel, Tavernier & Berghe, 2014). The weight included mail and cargo for commercial purposes and other uses.
The All Nippon Airways (ANA) airlines also had a part of the 2.1 million cargo freight at Changi airport in 2018. It had the least contribution among the top five flights that brought cargo at the Changi airport in Singapore, after China Airlines. It had 100 000 tons worth of goods at the Changi airport in Singapore, which was only 5% of the market share (Baxter & Srisaeng, 2018). The flight that used in 2018 was called Boeing 777 and had a loading capacity of 100 trips per year.
Changi Airport had awards for the top flight cargo airlines for boosting the airport's activities. The market shares allowed room for more airlines to use the Singapore airport to transport their cargo. More investments can be made both by the companies and the airport to increase competition in the aviation market.
