Agile project management (APM) represents a productivity framework and a team management strategy that advocates for incremental and continuous progress on work priorities, including during the process of change. The management approach has gained significant momentum and popularity over recent years due to its applicable and practical principles, such as simple communication and maximum focus on project vision (Hidalgo, 2019). The technique is characterized by its elasticity and flexibility, which allows an organization to respond quickly to prevailing changes. Therefore, an agile project management approach can be utilized best for an organizational project that has a short timeline. The technique is also useful when a firm needs to implement changes since it provides freedom and autonomy. Elsewhere, an organization can utilize this approach in the case where there is a need to establish an in-depth connection between the employees and the customers’ base. It is because APM also advocates for collaboration, teamwork, and customer satisfaction is always the primary objective.
The application of the APM approach mainly occurs in software development; however, its usage has extended to other business enterprises in the development of products, and learning institutions to complete academic projects and enhance collaboration among employees in the industry (Hidalgo, 2019). Despite these benefits, I have encountered some noticeable shortcomings of the approach during my work experiences. For example, the difference in the types of individual personalities present difficulties in integrating into the agile teams. Also, the technique advocates for teamwork; therefore, there must be an existence of a trustworthy relationship between team members. Finally, I also realized that some individual members struggled to develop intellectual activities within a short timeframe. At the same time, the elderly workers slowed down the project as they could not familiarize on time with the digital technologies.
In the material, I was able to learn that unlike traditional methods, APM releases first the most valuable features of a product. Then the agile teams go back and update those features frequently and efficiently (The Daily Manager, 2015). As a result, I think APM is a better approach than waterfall project management since it allows the project team to use the continuous customers’ feedback to reevaluate its priorities in every iteration (Madampe, 2017). However, some organizations deploy both techniques, with the waterfall model used in the approval of design while APM in the product development phase.
