Throughout the course, I have learned how to write my philosophy and why I want to teach. Items that I have completed during the course entail my philosophy, my teaching styles, informing my philosophy with history and significant events in education history. In this essay, I will be discussing the most influential aspect that stood out in how I looked at and developed a philosophy of education, my beliefs about the role of education and schooling in the lives of individuals, society as a whole, the roles of the teacher and student in the classroom experience as well as the goals for all students in the classroom and at graduation.
What Stands Out to me as the Most Influential in how I have looked at and Developed a Philosophy of Education
Among the four aspects that I have learned in this course, my styles of teaching stand out to me as the most influential in how I have looked at and developed a philosophy of education. Being and hands-on person, I have realized that my teaching styles and those that I would like to adopt even in the future connect with my philosophy of education. I understand that my interest in teaching has been influenced by my need to serve society by instilling knowledge to children. My teaching styles are informed by other philosophers who explain why a specific method of teaching is useful and how a teacher can use it to educate children at different levels of their development.
Applying practical approaches to teaching informed all other items that I developed and learned in the course. For instance, my style of teaching was told by the works of other philosophers such as Piaget and Vroom. Furthermore, the teaching method that I adopt as significant events in education history informs a teacher. I would say that my approach to teaching is informed by emerging perspectives of learning and teaching, as well as the history of education. For example, Piaget's constructivism connected well with my style of teaching. Being a hands-on person, getting involved in the work I am doing is exactly what children love when learning in and outside the classroom. Since students are not limited to receiving information, practically doing and showing them what I have taught in theory is a method that helps them to understand well. Orey (2010) stated that children create their ideas, and are limited to gaining knowledge as that expands their minds to learn more. In a classroom situation, my style of teaching is what will drive my philosophy of education as informed by significant events in education history.
My Beliefs about the Role of Education and Schooling in the Lives of Individuals
Individuals may go to school for different reasons. However, as a teacher, I believe that the role of education and schooling in the life of any individual is to gain knowledge. I would connect my belief with the purpose of education in the lives of people. Learning is achieved by giving instructions to students, preparing young people to their futures to face a world that is changing fast. Therefore, I believe that the role of education and schooling is to create individuals that are useful in their adult life, people who can compete and fit in society by engaging in meaningful relationships. The role of education and schooling for an individual is to gain knowledge that is applicable in all aspects of life. Through schooling, students develop skills, experience as well as dispositions that allow them to become responsible individuals in their future. In education and schooling, individuals learn to be independent, and this ensures their ability to maneuver through life challenges. I can connect the role of education and schooling for an individual with the view of Fredrick Douglas, who argued that gaining skills is a crucial step for an individual to get out of slavery (Carlene, and Natalia, 1999). It is one way to say that the role of education is to open up the mind of students to come out of slavery. When the mind of a slave is opened, then it is easy to rebel against oppression from their master.
My Beliefs about the Role of Education and Schooling for Society as a Whole
As a teacher, I believe society has specific needs that are addressed through education and schooling. Therefore, the role of education and schooling for society as a whole is to equip students with information useful in understanding and acting on aspects that are occurring in the community. When looking at the significant events in education history, I would say that the role of education in the United States has evolved over the years in a way that meets the emerging needs of society. My beliefs about the role of education and schooling for society as a whole are that students get morals and skills for enabling them to handle their future. According to John (2019), morals are what make good citizens and education, as well as schools, play the role of instilling morals to students to help them learn how to fit within the society. Education and schooling help in meeting the needs of the people in the community. For instance, by providing an equal forum for the citizens in the society, education and schooling promotes equality for students and opening the mind of many. Therefore, I believe that the role of education and schooling for the community as a whole is to transmit the norms and values of people.
My Beliefs about the Roles of Both the Teacher and the Student in the Classroom
The teacher and the student in the classroom have specific and different roles. The role of the teacher is to provide instructions to students in a manner that the learners understand best. I believe that teachers have a role in supporting a student on how to do things. When students are given a task, getting help is a way of boosting them in achieving their learning goals. Therefore, the teacher has the role of following up on the progress of the students and helping them until they understand. For instance, in a class lesson, there are slow learners and fast learners, the teacher has a role of identifying the different abilities of the students and look for the best way of approaching the learning needs of every learner.
The role of students is to listen carefully and follow the instructions provided by the teachers. This reminds me of the constructivist approach of teaching suggested by Vygotsky that students are active in the process of gaining knowledge. The role of the teacher is to develop the student's thinking process by engaging them in different practices as well as activities. According to Orey (2010), scaffolding is a practical approach that students use to learn after getting instructions. As a teacher, I believe that everyone requires assistance, and getting an education is critical in understanding how to perform tasks. The role of the student is to master the instructions, assignments, and complete the activities later alone without the assistance of the teacher.
The End Goals for All Students in the Classroom and at Graduation
Through my schooling experience, various aspects helped me to learn the specific end goals that all students should target to achieve in the classroom and at graduation. Students should focus on achieving both academic and non-academic goals in the classroom and at graduation. In the classroom, the main aim should be to achieving the educational goals whereby the student should put the effort to pass all the assessments in the classroom. At graduation, students should focus on attaining the non-academic goals that define their destiny. The graduation is a ceremony that provides evidence that the learners have achieved their academic goals as required by the school system as well as the state board of education. During the course and at graduation, students should develop non-academic skills that are useful in achieving success in their life irrespective of their different career paths in the future. Therefore, in the classroom and at graduation, students should focus on gaining the desire to become a lifelong learner and promoting discipline as the end goal.
In conclusion, my philosophy of education fits well with my beliefs as a teacher regarding the role of education and schooling in the lives of individuals and society as a whole. What stood out to me as the most influential from what I learned in this course are my styles of teaching. The method of teaching is supported by events in the history of education and the views of philosophers regarding education and schooling. As a teacher, I believe that the role of the teacher and student should be aligned to ensure the learner gains their end goals in the classroom and at graduation.
