The silo effect refers to a situation that involves the information in a firm failing to flow in some parts of an entity leading to communication breakdown. It leads to a limitation of the interaction between members of different departments in a firm, and this is an indication that there is a possibility of problems arising as the production process will not be efficient. The running of operations in a business requires effective coordination of processing considering that the output of one department is the input of another.
The silo effect has significant effect in the operations of a business, and it can even lead to its failure. Collaboration in an entity enables a company to experience optimal utilization of the limited resources available, which will trigger a rise in the volume of sales and profits made. However, when the togetherness lacks due to the silo effect, an entity will incur huge losses as the employees will be misusing the materials that are available to a company. Additionally, the quality of commodities will also reduce as the workers will not put a lot of emphasis on the activities that they are undertaking. There is a possibility of the occurrence of duplication of efforts and conflict of interest where people may engage in undertaking the same activities even when this is not supposed to be happening (Mohapeloa, 2017). Staff morale is essential to the growth and expansion of an entity, but it lacks when the silo effect is prevalent in business. Wars and undermining employees are some of the issues that trigger a decline in moral, and this is likely to happen when they are not managing to communicate with each other in the right way.
Some of the measures that can be undertaken to reduce cases of silo effect in a firm include having a unified vision of team collaboration. The procedure will ensure that all persons working in an entity are in harmony, and they are willing to share information with others in business and play a critical role in the exchange of information. The flow of the production process will be efficient leading to a rise in the revenue levels. Management should ensure that all personnel in a firm are working towards the realization of similar goals for this will ensure that all the employees are competent and ready to work together (Schlaman & Johnson, 2017). There is a need to have programs that will encourage workers to join forces and creates a platform that they can communicate and be at ease with each other. When these measures are undertaken, there is a high chance that an organization will manage to meet its objectives.
