My interest in becoming a dentist can be traced back to my childhood. I perceived dentistry as working diligently and respectfully and taking responsibility within a team in a rapidly changing environment. The profession was extremely appealing because it combined not only the love for science but also numerous practical aspects that would enable me to make a real improvement in the quality of life for my patients. As part of my dental degree, I have learned the significance of communication between the patients and dentists and achieved a genuine appreciation for the hard work and dedication needed for this demanding profession. I have enjoyed the kind of engagement that I have had throughout my dentistry degree. Therefore, I believe that the general residency practice program will play a significant role in allowing me to horn and practice all these skills that I have acquired.
Moving to the United States from China at the age of 12 was pivotal in my life. Not only was this an opportunity for me to get exposure to international exposure to a new environment, but also a chance to develop problem-solving skills within a new cultural environment. Living in New York as an immigrant has had great importance because of the opportunity to interact and attend to people of different backgrounds such as Latinos, African-Americans, and Asians.
I will be graduating from the New York College of Dentistry class of 2021, with gap 3.6. I believe that my academic qualifications will enable me to secure admission to your residency program. Completing the general residency practice in dentistry will allow me to improve my clinical skills and techniques and continue learning within this field. I want to learn more about the approaches and dentistry best practices. I will use whatever I have learned to benefit others as a dentist. I also plan to serve my community within both the private and public practice setting. Additionally, I am incredibly aware of the extensive skills and experience required of me, especially after I will have begun my professional career. I have performed exceptionally in dental school and developed a good set of skills to provide me with a firm base for training. I am particularly impressed with the multidisciplinary nature of your residency program because it integrates the knowledge from different disciplines primarily to ensure that patients are given the best quality of healthcare. Your program is observed further for the quality of its training and the amount of experience that it can be achieved with the volume of patients provided. I believe that this is the only residency program that suits my need and will broaden my efforts as required to be instrumental to the program if accepted.
Although I do not have significant work experience in dentistry, I believe that the practical experience that I gathered in class will enable me to complete my residency program successfully. I have been able to observe multiple root canals at the hospital settings and learning the teeth structure. I have also observed the applications of the veneer while watching the prosthodontist, composite fillings, and crown preparations. Spending time in a dental laboratory, following the amalgam fillings, denture fitting, and wisdom tooth extractions by surgeons all form some of my stronghold areas. Learning about the necessity for adaptability and the criticality of the teamwork between the dentist and the dental nurse was extremely important. Thus, possession of these skills will influence my ability to complete the program.
My career goal to be a skillful and helping practitioner. Skills empathy for the patients, multicultural competence, good team player, willingness to learn, and hardworking are some aspects that I would love to learn as part of my residency program. I understand that effective healthcare delivery requires a strong understanding of the patients and attending to their needs. I previously participated in many outreach and community service for dentally underserved populations and therefore believe that I possess a deep understanding of some of the needs of the population I will be working on. There has always been a philosophy of service in my family, and each year, I spend time together with other members of the community through participating in the service projects. For many years, I have assisted in providing food, beds, and other valuable requirements to the vulnerable populations within the New York states. I have also spent several years working with several volunteers within the underserved areas of New York. The role has mainly involved helping the Latinos and Asians immigrants improve their lives. This kind of interaction has enabled me to develop social and communication skills that will help me understand and attend to my patients in a more appropriate manner. Being sensitive around nervous patients and providing full explanations to any treatments will enable patients to be open and trusting towards me.
