Link Choice
Both the links provide distinctive details about art and a rich historical consideration of ancient events, that are well presented one after the other. The two links provide a distinctive presentation of almost identical ideas. In other words, the two different artists possess a rich understanding of placing and depicting elements based on size, texture, and color, to ensure that even minute details are easily captured without further straining. Gerard David's The Virgin and Child with Saints and Donor, has outlined a series of identical details that make the art one of the most elegant and detailed. Therefore, I would like to consider using the first link, which covers Gerard David's art, to elaborate on how the art relates to North Renaissance art.
What it covers, and how the specific work or artist is presented
The art elaborates on the Virgin, Christ encountering saints and donors at His younger age, where it has been depicted with explicit detailing of elements that bring the reality to them. Each element, ranging from tiles on the floor to the grape arbor, depicts a meticulous artwork that is more detailed to capture every element. The concept helps to add distinction and clarity that separates one element from the other.
Detailing of "The Virgin and Child with Saints and Donor" has been used as one of the concepts to bring the art to life. Minute details have helped to elaborate on the art in numerous ways. For instance, the Iris in the art looks as if it has dew on it, which brings the purity and freshness of the Iris. The use of detailing colors helps to develop the impression of the Iris containing dew. The choice of color has also helped achieve the transparency on Christ's legs, with more details indicated on the curls. The use of shadows on Christ's body has been used to outline His appearance, which helps to transition between his body and the background colors.
The use of overlapping images has been used to define the luxury outfit of the donor and the saints within the art. Detailing of the clothes indicates that the people present in the art were deemed as people of higher social status, which is evidenced by what they wore. For instance, the curls on the gray garment worn by the patron depict a detailed concept of art.
Symbolism has been used as another significant factor in the art to describe the purity of the Virgin, which has been attained through the lilies and Irises. The lily in the art symbolizes Mary's virginity, while the Iris symbolizes her faithfulness. On the contrary, a jar of ointment on the hand of Mary Magdalene reminded me that she anointed the feet of Christ. Christ's movement in Mary's lap, reaching over towards Catherine, and handing her a ring, symbolizes that she is married to Christ, especially when she refused to marry the emperor of Rome, as she was married to Christ.
The material world used in the art helps to reveal the spiritual world, that is part of the Northern Renaissance. Precise positioning of the elements defines the careful concepts used to produce the art. As part of the Northern Renaissance, wine depicted a ceremonial event, which is also captured in the art, as part of the background. More so, the grape picking is a reference to the Eucharist, as well as Christ's announcement to the last Supper.
