The least restrictive approach in the treatment of patients with mental health problems refers to the practices of creating an environment that supports an individual's wellbeing and recovery and at the same time preserving their rights, dignity and freedoms as much as possible (Cowin et al., 2013). In most cases, patients with mental health problems tend to develop violent behaviors, a situation that requires careful intervention among nurses and other medical professionals. Less restrictive approaches are common in different healthcare settings not only to those patients with mental health issues but also to other patients who have complicated health conditions (Foster et al., 2017). In the mental health setting, the recovery process usually takes longer; this is due to the less restrictive measures employed by the medical professionals. While dealing with the mentally ill patients, everything that a nurse undertakes that restricts an individual's freedom of action ought to be the least restrictive choice that can meet the needs, in other words, it is not just allowing a vulnerable individual do whatever they wish, it is about maintaining their safety while restricting their freedoms and rights (Duxbury, 2012).
