Nursing is a highly interpersonal field that requires practitioners to maintain a positive relationship with other practitioners, patients, and individuals for effectiveness in healthcare service delivery. The relationship is achieved through communication, collaboration, and cooperation and can be categorized as interprofessional collaboration and interprofessional education, as discussed in this essay.
Interprofessional education (IPE) is an effective pedagogy in healthcare education as it fosters safe service delivery, enhanced healthcare quality, and optimized patient care. IPE refers to diverse healthcare professions engaging in a combined learning environment to promote healthcare and collaboration (Zechariah et al., 2019). Interprofessional collaboration (IPC), on the other hand, encourages a joint team approach, which fosters enhanced patient care, reduced stays in hospitals and associated costs, and fewer medical errors. Unlike IPE which promotes combined learning of different healthcare professionals, IPC involves multiple practitioners from diverse fields and backgrounds cooperating to deliver enhanced quality of healthcare to patients (Prentice et al., 2015).
There are various ways through which collaboration can be achieved in healthcare. One is defining the collaborative approach to ensure that everyone is on the same page. Secondly, roles can be clearly defined and delegated to team members depending on their background and experience (Morley & Cashell, 2017). However, each role must be respected. Thirdly, all the responsibilities and tasks should be assigned effectively through the essential components of collaboration; clear communication, coordination, and shared duties to avoid conflict.
Different healthcare disciplines learn together by developing the right attitude towards each field before any professional bias is introduced. They also learn through the development of proper educational structures, including learning curricula and competencies that promote various disciplines' integration.
IPC is a core part of my practicum project as I am working with a team of professionals derived from diverse backgrounds to promote veterans' well-being within their homes. I have to collaborate with my team members, doctors for proper diagnosis and advice, and pharmacists for the right prescription. I am also in a learning environment as we are frequently involved in training sessions with healthcare professionals and other professions in fields such as public health, ethics, and communication.
