Introduction
The volatility of the global environment and its competitive nature has led to the complexity of world trade (Lehmacher, 2017). Therefore, supply chains are evolving to meet the current changes. Supply chain management has become a vital topic of discussion and an essential agenda in every boardroom meeting relating to business management. This paper describes the global supply chain ecosystem evolution, together with the anticipated designs.
Globalized Economy
Today's globalized economy has been a result of the ever-evolving supply chains. In the twenty-first century, supply chains comprise complex operations leading to a world-wide interconnection between the supply and demand networks (Delina et al., 2018). The interconnection has enabled efficient and effective trade between companies and countries. For example, international cargo flows have been possible. The evolving supply chain drives competitive advantage for various businesses. The ecosystem has created barriers for new entrants in that they are forced to produce identical products and, at the same time, compete for the suppliers who already form the network (Garcia-Alcaraz et al., 2020). New businesses are to either shut down or be part of the ecosystem hence no competition.
Conclusion
There are several anticipated new designs driven by the evolution of the supply chain ecosystem. First, emerging technologies such as drones and robotic automation will finally transform the transportation of goods (Swanson et al., 2017). Further, evolving customer channels will ensure a shift from traditional retail to direct to consumer shipping. The global supply chain ecosystem evolution is, therefore, vital for business success.
