Anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa are two eating disorders that have been in existence for a long while and people have been trying to come up with ways that they can use to treat them. Anorexia nervosa can be diagnosed among people who are seen to have problems when it comes to restricted modes of eating, extreme cases of thinness and also developing a lot of fear concerning being overweight (Grohol, 2018). When one develops a feeling that he or she is overweight whereas they are thin, it can be concluded that they are suffering from Anorexia.
On the other hand, one can be diagnosed with Bulimia when found to be overeating and also developing a feeling that nothing is enough and that there is no food time. Such people are never in the position to control the amount of food that they take, and in most cases, they happen to be overweight. The diagnosis can also become positive when they show instances of forcing themselves to vomit so that they cannot become overweight having in mind that they take a lot of food (Grohol, 2018). In some instances, when found to be using too many laxatives, they will be positively diagnosed with bulimia.
Anorexia is based on the fact that one takes less food to keep fit and refrain from adding weight. In this case, one develops a character that is influenced by the social interactions and the topics that people are discussing in the society. For instance, if people have been discriminating those who are overweight or obese in the society; then such people will tend to limit the kind of food that they take even if they are not fat (National Institute of Mental Health, 2018). This affects them psychologically, and they start thinking that they are the ones who are not needed in the society due to the kind of weight that they have. The treatment options that are available for anorexia are based on psychotherapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, and family therapy. The most effective among this has been the psychotherapy for anorexia because it addresses the eating disorder and also handles the emotional health that is attached to the same to have an attitude that will lead to happiness.
On the other hand, bulimia is also treated based on cognitive behavioural therapy, psychotherapy and family therapy. Psychotherapy is the most common in this case and has proved to be the most effective (Grohol, 2018). This is because those who have undergone it have shown positive changes when it comes to emotional and cognitive characters and they do so within a short time.
The recovery rates for people who are suffering from anorexia and bulimia are different, but they all depend on the kind of treatment that has been undertaken. The recovery rates in anorexia are faster than the one that is seen in bulimia. In this case, the doctor or the therapist has to deal with the emotional aspects of the patient since that is what has led to the development of the disorder (Grohol, 2018). Thus, they will have to be trained to realize that they are not overweight and that they should develop the normal eating character. This cuts across the self-perception and also the self-image that is attached to the way the society interprets cases of being overweight.
The recovery rates for bulimia are slower than the one that is seen in anorexia. In most case, people who have been diagnosed with bulimia are likely to have started developing the character while young, and it has grown to become complex as they get to the adulthood stage (National Institute of Mental Health, 2018). In that case, it is always challenging when it comes to the treatment of bulimia. The self-perception that one has had from childhood is not easy to eliminate because they believe that is how things should be (National Institute of Mental Health, 2018). In that case, they usually are taken through many programs of therapies so that they can be able to develop a new self-image and realize that the eating behavior is not acceptable.
There are true stories of people who have been suffering from anorexia and bulimia, and each of them has nearly the same reasons as to why they ended up being in such a position. Kristina is one of the patients who suffered from anorexia while still at a young age of ten. She underwent tremendous weight loss, and that made the parents and friends think that she was suffering from a terminal illness that needed to be treated immediately. When she was taken to a therapist, and the diagnosis provided positive results, she was later on provided with a schedule to meet therapists so that she could be treated and she got well by the time when she was turning eleven.
Magnolia Creek is an organization that has been taking part in the development of stories of people suffering from Bulimia. In this case, they provided a true story of Brandy who was suffering from bulimia while at a young age of five. At that age, she already had a feeling that there was an issue when it came to overeating and that she was overweight. The eating disorder went on until when she got to the age of seven, and it was at that time when the parents intervened by taking her to a therapist to get some treatment since she has started segregating herself from the other people of the society.
