They say failure is the opportunity to begin again, only this time more wisely. The most important lessons in life are learned through failures, and that is why we should embrace it as it comes. Below is a personal experience with failure. The situation was project based, and I was on the team that was working to evaluate for a production company in the watch making industry. The hypothesis we were testing is whether it was necessary to move a new ERP system. All so focused on completing the project, my team and I ignored vital information that we knew only too well would cost us in the future. The client we were working for had major organizational issues, structural problems in the business and specific processes employed were far away from best practices. Of course, it would have made more sense to clarify the issues before proceeding with the project, but we overlooked the errors.
Ambition to be the first in Swatch Group to implement SAP HANA as a pilot project had gotten the better of us that we compromised on fundamental principles and processes. It was not long before our negligence came to light. I realized my mistake at the conception phase of the project; the client did not have enough staff capacity to realize such a project. As a result, I was not able to solve the organizational and business structure issued in the limited time allocated to the project. My credibility, as well as analytic skills, were questioned, and the project had to be stopped after two months.
From my failure, I learned a few things. First, it is always good to follow the right procedure and protocol in coming up with a project. Every detail should be given the attention it deserves to avoid professional negligence. Secondly, too much of anything is poisonous. Over ambition can be dangerous and overestimating my abilities is unrealistic and costly. Finally, I learned always to take my time to prepare for a project before jumping into it.
