Introduction
Down syndrome is a chromosomal disorder that happens when chromosome 21 is resulted during cell division thus causing delays in the development and the intelligence of a child. Down syndrome is associated with characteristics such as lazy eyes, flat facial features, short neck and a bulging tongue among others. Intellectually, the person has poor judgement, a short attention span and slow at learning (Crosta, 2017). Although down syndrome affects just one self, the whole family is normally impacted in a way or another when a member is suffering from the condition.
Child With Down Syndrome
A family that has a child with down syndrome can face financial problems because they will spend a lot of money on the medical health of the kid. Additionally, such kids require special attention and at least one of the parents usually quit their jobs so that they can give their children enough attention and care thus lower earnings in the family (Leach, 2016). Children whose siblings have down syndrome tend to become more mature at an earlier age from helping in taking care of their disabled sibling.
Some parents up getting too stressed as they try to figure out how to raise a kid with a disability or lack of finances to deal with the situation. They could also be struggling to have a good mother child relationship with the kid to no avail thus get more stressed. For mothers who had never even witnessed such a kid being raised, they might end up feeling burdened the kind of responsibility that comes from raising such a baby. According to Norton (2016), When a family has a kid with down syndrome, everyone wants to chip in and help in raising the kids and this works positively for the family and they end up closer and stronger.
Several Services
There are several services that have been come up with so as to help the kids with down syndrome since the condition is not curable and the only thing that can be done is to help its victims have a better life. Firstly, therapy services are provided to the kids with the aim of impacting them positively. States are also providing the right education for free to this kind of kids. All the same, this services are not sufficient since they only cater for just the disabled child yet the impact of the down syndrome is usually experienced by the entire family. Additionally, the therapy option is normally available until the third age, from where the districts of public schools provide disability services.
Families with kids that suffer from down syndrome need different kinds of support depending on the family. For instance, if the family is wealthy, they do not require financial help but if the kid is from a family that struggles financially, then giving financial help to the family would be thoughtful. The support that every family whose child has down syndrome needs is emotional support so that they feel that having a kid with the disability is as okay as having a normal kid. Additionally, one can show love and concern to their kid who has down syndrome so that they feel that despite the disability, their disabled kid is loved as much as their healthy ones. When talking about the family’s kids one should talk about them equally, not addressing the disabled one in a special way so that the parents feel it’s totally normal to have such a baby.
Conclusion
In conclusion, parents who give birth to kids with the down syndrome disorder should show them love so that they do not feel so different from other children. Additionally, they should ensure they get the right medical attention so that even though they cannot heal, they lead healthier lives. The kids should also get the right therapy so that they grow to understand what they are suffering from and still feel normal with the disorder.
