Introduction
According to the state Department of Health, coronavirus was stopped after workers faced racial slurs across Minnesota. After many cases of Minnesota residents’ intimidation and shouting ethnic and racial slurs at the public health workers that had begun door to door coronavirus survey (Pietsch, 2020). It has been reported that three men that refused to accepted their identification as public health workers surrounded a team of workers in Eitzen, Minnesota. They confronted the health workers, and one of the men was armed and used racial epithets. According to Dan Huff, an assistant commissioner at the Minnesota Health Department, the key objective of the men was intimidating the workers (Pietsch, 2020). The incident was very troubling as the residents followed and videotaped while threatening to call the police on the workers.
Survey
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Minnesota Department of Health had come together to carry out the survey whose key objective was improving the understanding of the epidemiologist on how coronavirus is spreading in Minnesota. According to the New York Times Database, the coronavirus cases in Minnesota have increased drastically. On Sunday, the number of new cases was at 1,296, which was the highest number (Pietsch, 2020).
Jeff Adamson, Eitzen mayor, through an interview, stated that the area residents were concerned about the unusual sighting of a vehicle that had California license plates. However, the Mayor denied that no confrontations comprised of weapons and racial slurs were witnessed. Thus, the vehicle from another state is what raised suspicion in that small rural community. According to the Mayor, the three men involved in the incident were already identified since “everybody knows everybody in the town” (Pietsch, 2020). But he declined to identify the three men in public.
Mayor, Adamson wondered where was coming from the issue. According to him, the hatred was not coming from the City of Eitzen. In a statement that the Mayor released on Friday night, he claimed that no gun or weapon was present during the incident. There were no threats, or aggressive behavior witnessed during the interaction between the coronavirus team and the city members (Pietsch, 2020). Besides, Mr. Adamson claims that the team misinterpreted a large fire department communication radio in a holster for a firearm.
Conclusion
The health department spokeswoman, while responding to the Mayor’s statement, stated that when the incident was reported to them, it was severe, and they had no reason to doubt the details of the event. Therefore, C.D.C was forced to recall their teams, and the study was terminated due to the seriousness of the reports (Pietsch, 2020).
According to Mr. Huff, assistant commissioner at the Minnesota Health Department, the interactions could have been viewed as a misunderstanding, but over a past week, a pattern had emerged (Pietsch, 2020). They had identified that teams which comprised of people of color had been reporting high incidents of coronavirus cases compared to teams that did not comprise of people of color. Moreover, people in some regions of rural Minnesota had scoffed at Covid-19 protocols, such as the state-wide mandate of putting on the mask. Thus, Mr. Huff claims that the residents were taking out frustrations on the public health workers that were carrying out their work and trying to help the community as much as they could (Pietsch, 2020). Therefore, the individuals were disagreeing with the coronavirus policy and angry about the coronavirus restrictions.
