Introduction
Cefuroxime is an antibiotic which is used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections, including urinary tract infection (UTI). This anti-infective medication is under the category class of cephalosporin antibiotics (Multum, 2020). The expected pharmacological action of cefuroxime on UTI is that it hinders the synthesis of the bacterial cell wall, causing cell death, hence the bactericidal (Multum, 2020).
Cefuroxime's primary therapeutic uses are treating bacterial infections such as bronchitis, gonorrhea, and meningitis in neonates and infants (Multum, 2020). Further, the anti-infective medication is used to treat septicemia, peri-operative infections, prophylaxis, skin, and soft tissue infection (Multum, 2020).
Complications
The use of cefuroxime in UTI treatment may result in complications such as allergic reactions, severe headaches, genital tract mycosis, pseudomembranous colitis, glossitis, and gastrointestinal disturbances (Multum, 2020). This medication is administered by mouth, and the patient with UTI is given 125mg twice daily. It should also be taken during or after eating to ensure the medication's easy absorption (Multum, 2020).
Cefuroxime is not used in cases where the patient has hypersensitivity reactions or where the patient has penicillin cross-sensitivity (Multum, 2020). Further, patients with kidney disease, malnourished, or a history of intestinal problems should not have the medication.
Nursing Interventions
Nursing interventions are essential before and during cefuroxime administration. The nurses should ensure to record the patient's medical history, accurate patient's examination, and tests done while advising the patients on the right dosage of the medication (Multum, 2020).
It is worth noting that cefuroxime has several drug interactions such as incompatibility with fluconazole, aminoglycosides, amsacrine, and antagonistic effects with chloramphenicol in-vitro studies (Multum, 2020).
Client education is very vital before the patient is introduced to cefuroxime therapy. The patients should be educated concerning the side effects of the medication, consequences of having the wrong dosage, and conditions under which they should take or not take cefuroxime (Multum, 2020).
Conclusion
UTI is one of the most common bacterial infection, which can either be lower urinary tract infection (LUTIs) or Upper Urinary tract Infection (UUTIs), which involve infection of the urethra, bladder, and prostate glands (Cunha, 2020).
The occurrence of UTI can significantly alter health if not treated early enough; prolonged UTI can cause damage to the kidney hence reducing kidney function (Cunha, 2020). The patients should be advised to take the right dosage of cefuroxime immediately they are diagnosed with UTI and increased fluids intake.
