Part A: Clarifying Your Values
Values are fundamental beliefs that guide your attitudes and behaviours. They help you determine what is important to you and give your life meaning.
You had the opportunity to learn about your values at Leadership Camp. Reflect on your top three (3) values and complete the following chart:
Value #1 Define this value using your own words
(1 mark) My very first value is commitment. By commitment here, I mean that I have an aspect of self-drive that makes me be a go-getter and always strive to achieve my personal goals. Commitment implies to the ability in me that enables me to accomplish my duties and never leave any stone unturned.
Explain why you believe this value is important
(1 mark) The reason as to why I believe this value is significant is that without commitment, there are several things in life that I could not be able to achieve. Everything is difficult, and it requires a commitment for one to accomplish any task that gets presented to them. It is the commitment in one that makes a difference in people. If everybody had the same level of commitment, then probably everyone could be having the same degree of success, which is not the case.
How are you practicing, promoting and living this value? (1 mark) Commitment requires continuous practice in everything that I do to maintain it. Nevertheless, to promote this value in me, it calls for self-discipline whereby I have to ensure that I finish all my works without necessarily being supervised or instead followed. The significant aspect of providing that I have the required discipline to maintain the commitment value in me is the setting of targets and coming up with a personal plan to follow and achieve such goals. Making commitment part of my daily life has enabled me to live with it, and it has formed part of me means I cannot do without it.
What is challenging about practicing, promoting and living this value? (1 mark) Just like any other thing, maintaining a personal value is never an easy task, and it requires a high level of discipline to do so. The aspect of training is what makes this a challenging thing to practice, promote, and live with.
Value #2 Define this value using your own words
(1 mark) My second value is the value of loyalty. What it means to be loyal is that I have the obedience to follow my principles without any undue influence ether external or internal. Being real means that I can do what I have in my plans without necessarily having to change it to fit anything else.
Explain why you believe this value is important
(1 mark) Loyalty is one of the fundamental values in me that I can account. With commitment, it becomes straightforward to become successful since you can believe in your plans. Being loyal is very important again as it is through it that others will trust you and assist you in achieving your dreams. For example, my parents have always been willing to support me as I always keep my promises.
How are you practicing, promoting and living this value?
(1 mark) Living with loyalty is a difficult task as there are always tempting moments when you feel like being disloyal. However, I have managed to live with this value by ensuring that I set goals that are realistic so that I do not get discouraged in the process of trying to attain them. I also practice being loyal by always trying to abide by my plans and targets.
What is challenging about practicing, promoting and living this value? (1 mark) The most challenging part of being loyal is that you can be loyal to others but they fail to be faithful to you, and this usually leads to one getting also tempted not to be loyal.
Value #3 Define this value using your own words
(1 mark) My number three value is hard work. Hard-work is everything here; it is what has enabled me to achieve my goals and remain focused on acquiring even much. It is through hard work that I keep going and ensure that I finish all my tasks on time and as required.
Explain why you believe this value is important
(1 mark) Hard-work is essential as it is the key to success. However, it is critical to work hard towards an already predetermined purpose and direction. Through hard work, my capacity, strength, and self-confidence are increased, and this enables me to achieve my goals.
How are you practicing, promoting and living this value?
(1 mark) The only way that I have been able to maintain and live according to this value is to be strategic in whatever I do and ensure that there nothing that I do in vain. Hard-work gets promoted through success and success also encourages hard-work, and therefore, the two aspects work together.
What is challenging about practicing, promoting and living this value? (1 mark) Hard-work becomes challenging when there is no strategy and set goals to get achieved. However, when you have purpose and direction, working hard becomes fruitful, and you do not see any challenge in it.
Part B: Developing Your Strengths
Strengths Based Leadership is about achieving your full potential by maximizing your strengths. In other words, you will be more successful if you spend the majority of your time building on what you already do well than if you spend it on fixing your weaknesses.
