"Your life does not just 'happen.' Whether you know it or not, it is carefully designed by you. The choices, after all, are yours." Stephen Covey. In life, people have to make choices if they have to live better. Life is never spontaneous, but a total of the decisions that one makes day by day (Covey 71-307).
In his book, 7-Habits of Highly Effective People, Stephen Covey explores essential habits any person has to adapt for him or her to be successful in life. The principals in the book explain that people always have opportunities to change situations to achieve better results. For a person to be successful in business, he needs to adopt the seven habits to gain interpersonal skills that are required for the success of the business.
Habit 1 "Be Proactive." By being proactive, it means focusing on those little things that we can change for a better future. As an individual, one should take responsibility for his or her actions and stand up to make it better.
Habit 2: "Begin with the End in Mind." In this case, a person has to know what he or she wants in life and goes for it.
Habit 3: "Put First Things First." Here, the Habit directs individuals to set their priorities straight. Habit 4: "Think Win-Win." The Habit requires that for any person to be successful, he or she has to consider others too, and should not make others lose for him or her to win.
Habit 5: "Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood." The tenets in this principle require that we always seek to understand other people's arguments before we judge.
Habit 6: "Synergize." This means listening to other people, and gathering their knowledge that you can use to come up with better results than they can as individuals.
Habit 7: "Sharpen the Saw." The four pillars that an individual has to safeguard to ensure that he or she is alert and up to the task are the physical, spiritual, mental, and social/ emotional well-being (Covey 71-307).
When I study the seven habits of Stephen Covey, I gain an in-depth understanding of success and what I need to do for me to be successful in business. The book equips me with decision-making skills that are important in my practice. The habits that Stephen Covey explores are a constant reminder that growth emanates from my core values as an individual, for me to be successful in any business I have to choose my circle carefully and make proactive decisions that not only cater for today but the future.
I have so many things that need to be done which require finances and time. Learning to prioritize things would help me use urgency to sort out things. When having negotiations with my partners and coworkers, I should focus on letting each team win and not putting my interest first. This way, both parties become happy with the outcome, which leads to more productivity. To remain focused, I need to revitalize my body and spirit by ensuring that my physical, emotional, and social well-being is catered for.
The book teaches me that to be successful in life, and you need other people, their ideas, materials, and physical inputs. I need teamwork for me to be successful in my career and experience, and Stephen covey has taught me how to achieve this. Every person, regardless of age, level of education, or occupation, deserves a copy of the seven habits of highly effective people, to be successful in life.
