Introduction
Statistics and application of statistics are vital in health care. It guides in guiding decision-makers in the company. Statistical packages come in handy when healthcare providers are gauging their performance. Health agencies use these packages to determine the well-being and general health of the population. Analytical tools help to establish the effectiveness of various treatments and symptoms and assess the risk linked to patients. Healthcare companies have struggled in effectively delivering quality goods and services. By using statistical applications, the companies can gauge their performance in the offering of products and services to their customers. Knowing the performance of the company is useful in improving the quality of service delivery. The occurrence of events leading to accidents at the workplace contributes to almost ten per cent of deaths resulting in hospitals (Mitchell & Williamson et al., p. 195). The need for patient care and safety stems from various studies done, which places four out of ten patients to be affected while receiving care at a hospital facility.
Statistical tools gather information vital in deducing consumer patterns and market characteristics, which can inform the organization of what care a customer can afford. The data makes the firm know what type of goods and services to give the population from which they operate. Product innovation based on statistical information collected on clinical trials weighs the benefits and risks of drugs. New diseases or those under study require the gathering of information before any products developed to tackle the disease. When used in healthcare, it improves patient safety by analyzing ways in which safety measures can be incorporated in services delivery to minimize accidents and the workplace thus reducing operating cost resulting from paying for accidents which occur at health facilities (Graban, 2016). Statistical applications help to prevent and mitigate risk and harm that occurs to patients during service delivery. The statistical packages come in handy by providing data that promote safety improvement, hiring skilled labour, and patient involvement in caring for their needs. The analytical tools can help healthcare providers determine trends in healthcare by monitoring local conditions making a comparison to national trends, and the data in helping to assist in the allocation of funds for research purposes in the health sector.
The information from statistical data helps countries and healthcare providers identify reasons people die or are injured. The information allows countries and the health sector to prioritize the use of its resources. Statistics can be vital when it comes to leadership in the healthcare sector. The data collected from various healthcare fraternity areas can be used in drug development and create a distinction between one healthcare provider and another. It enables companies to stay ahead by analyzing the data collected through statistical packages to deduce the needs of patients and emerging trends in the healthcare industry.
Cancer
Cancer is a relatively new phenomenon globally, and there is no known treatment for the disease. Statistics are complementary and essential in my area of expertise as it helps in researching to find ways to treat tumours, and if any drugs are available found to treat tumours. Many people in the world are being affected by cancer, and the need for more research is necessary to stem the growing issue globally. The statistical tools help collect relevant, reliable, and valid data on the treatment of tumours and shed light on other avenues that provide better treatment and to patients. The data used to make computations is from surveys, medical records from various healthcare institutions, disease registries, and peer-reviewed literature.
All these avenues of collecting data are vital when it comes to getting accurate information. Some symptoms require patient reporting such as pain and fatigue; through statistical details, it is possible to develop a system that can provide consistent clinical measures. The known sources of data in oncology include world health organization statistical information system (WHOSIS), national centre for healthcare statistics, and statistics Canada. It helps draw reasonable inferences from all the collected information. It helps make a sound decision when faced with uncertainty when dealing with a patient who presents a challenge in terms of medical needs (Gambrill & Gibbs, 2017). It also helps in assessing risk and explaining it to patients, evidence summaries, interpreting screening results, and reading research publications that aid knowledge in oncology.
The statistics carry the information of each patient. The data can determine which kind of care a patient needs. Statistics also determines the type of treatment that is favourable to the patient in terms of recovery based on the patients' medical history. The information helps in the classification of patients if the said case needs specialized equipment and help. Statistical knowledge and application are therefore crucial in the health sector because it helps to collect information which can be helpful in research and development of new treatment methods (Groves, Kayyali, et al.,2016). The statistical analysis packages allow me to investigate proposed medical treatments, determining its competing therapies, and establish the best treatment combination suitable for the patient. In conclusion, statistical knowledge is essential in the medical field in every stage of decision making, including; sample selection, data management, and interpretation of the results.
