Modern Family
Modern Family is an ABC episode series that was inaugurated into the American audience in September 2009 (Telios, 2012). The series illustrates the life of three families, closely bonded to form one big extended family. Modern family shares out a reflection of a traditional family, portrayed in the episodes by Dunphys family. Additionally, the program illustrates the homosexual family way of life, pictured by the Pritchett-Tuckers family. Also, the program exemplifies a mixed marriage drawn by the Pritchett family, a marriage comprising of a much old and young couple. Furthermore, the series depicts women as a weak stance in both traditional and contemporary society.
Dunphys
The traditional family of Dunphys comprises Phil and Clair Dumphy together with their children Alex, Haley, and Luke. From words of Telios (2012), the building of the character Clair is based on gender stereotypes that society has to impose on women and their role in relationships over many years. Besides, the setting of the episode presents women as weak and inferior to the male gender. Women are considered irresponsible in that they do not contribute anything to the family in terms of income. However, Clair shows motherhood traits, protects the household name, and acts as a good parent to her children.
Prichett Family
The Prichett family comprise of Jay and Gloria together with their son Delgado. The family shows the existence of age differences in marriage. Remarkably, the family presents the same view of treatment to women, where Gloria is portrayed as a weak and inferior woman in the family (Telios, 2012). Jay is the provider of the family's needs while Gloria stays at home, cooks clean, and serves the family. The family illustrates racial stereotypes against Hispanics together with an enforcement of a hegemony society.
Prichett-Tuckers
The Prichett-Tuckers is a family in the Modern Family series that comprises Cameron and Mitchell Pritchett and their adopted child called Lily. The family consists of characters who show both masculine and feminine qualities because they are a gay family couple. In a way to cover up their features, they lay hold of the Stereotypes features to dollop different views that prevent them from negative treatment from society. According to Bookbinder (2014), Cameron fits better on the qualities of a female character, while Mitchell outshines the features of a man. Mitchell resembles the characteristics of the head of a family; hence, he is the family's breadwinner. However, Cameron is very muscular; hence Mitchell depends on him for personal protection. Mitchell has ambitions of bringing masculine features to his adopted daughter's life to contradict the purpose of men in society.
Conclusion
To sum up, Modern Family series implement a lot of stereotypes in marriage and family. It is important to note that the program plays a vital role in society, as are situations that apostatize from stereotypes embedded in the minds of contemporary people. The program shows some of the things the society may fail to convey.
