Introduction
As the transportation manager, I would have to come up with a transportation strategy that is effective, timely and is cost-effective. However, the transportation strategy that I would undertake, either for domestic or international transportation, would need to meet the following requirements. First, the system should have segmentation, in that, the shipments being transported would be categorized according to their urgency or the priority given to the shipment. This means that the deliveries would have to recognize that each shipment has different requirements and should, therefore, be treated differently. Secondly, the shipment method settled upon should acknowledge the need for customer specifications in the handling of the materials being delivered. This means that the specific demands of the customers should be respected, since if they are not, they may not bring future business interactions to our company. Therefore, the preferences of the clients on the shipment method to be followed must be considered and given priority since the customer knows what is best for their business and failure to this may lead to spoiled relationships between the client and the organization.
Timeliness
Next, the strategy should consider the timeliness of the mode of transportation selected and the effect that the shipment choice has on the business and the relationship between the organization and its customers. Generally, air transport is faster than all the other available means, and therefore should be considered for urgent orders. For bulky orders, the use of water, road or rail transportation should be considered, depending on their availability. This, therefore, means that the availability of the means of transport will determine their use as well as the time requirements for the order in question. When timeliness is observed in the orders made, the possibility of the businesses experiencing increased business traffic on account of their preference by customers is increased due to the general choice of customers for organizations with speedy delivery.
Number of Items
The number of items under transportation will also play a role in the selection of the mode of shipment. Bulkier goods will require modes of transportation that will help in comfortably handling the shipment, with methods such as sea transport, rail transport and road transportation being preferred for the bulky shipments. However, if the order is urgent, then I would have to consider other options for shipping, with some modifications done to be able to accommodate the bulky order. For example, I would consider breaking down a bulky order into smaller and more manageable sizes to ensure that the order gets to the customers on time. The reliability of the transportation method would also be an issue of consideration since our shipments have to be on time, secure and deliver the goods with as little damage as possible.
Conclsuion
Finally, it means that the risks associated with the shipment methods would have to be considered so that the least risky one would be settled on and, in the process, give the best outcomes from the procedures undertaken. When a shipment arrives late or with the ordered goods destroyed, the company will have to make a replacement for the damaged order, which is costly in terms of money and the reputation of the company. Therefore, I would consider charging the customers enough to ensure that the shipments will be made in a timely and secure way, instead of charging cheaply and ending up destroying the reputation of the organization through substandard services.
