Introduction
In the novel, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, the author starts the book by portraying characters, Mr. Hyde, as a monster. For example, the author says that Mr. Hyde is characterized by pale and dwarfish appearance. Additionally, the character is associated with displeasing smiles (Stevenson, 79). These traits are mysterious because they vary from what a normal individual possesses. Additionally, the physical appearance of Mr. Hyde typically varies from a normal person. The author says, "God bless me, and the man seems hardly human! Something troglodytic, shall we say?" (Stevenson, 80). From the above description, Mr. Hyde is perceived as if he is suffering from social anxiety and isolation because other individuals criticize him due to his physical appearance. Additionally, Dr. Jekyll is portrayed as a monster after copying Mr. Hyde's character. In the novel, Dr. Jekyll describes Mr. Hyde as evil but does not realize that his traits can also be classified the same. Dr. Jekyll says, "This, as I take it, was because all human beings, as we meet them, are commingled out of good and evil: and Edward Hyde, alone in the ranks of mankind, was pure evil" (Stevenson, 84). As such, the traits of monsters are not directly indicated; instead, the author has used the characters' traits to show monstrous. From this information, a monster is a creature that has some qualities which are not available in normal people, and it has the ability to perform abnormal activities.
How Has the Appeal of Monster Stories Changed or Stayed the Same Over Time?
Currently, the appeal of monster has dramatically changed. In the past, monsters were used as the center of all stories. Application of monster stories were seen as a technique to maintain and promote social norms. As such, readers were given different a chance to develop several opinions based on how the monster reacted. As such, society members were given the freedom to select their behaviors after comprehending a certain monster concept. Nowadays, the development of technology has changed how operations are conducted. In this case, technology development has changed how authors draft their novel. In most cases, novels try to brainstorm and analyze current major problems which are affecting the world. As such, most of the novels do not concentrate on a monster like how to solve existing issues (Stevenson, 67). Additionally, social roles have totally changed after the introductions of institutions such as schools which influence people knowledge. Increase in knowledge offers have changed people perceptions, and thus, tales which are related to monsters have become useless.
What Does the Comparison of Time Periods Say About Monsters-Or People?
In literature, time is an essential component that influences how characters and plot are expressed. As such, time helps to understand behaviors and attitudes which have a certain impact on the setting of a story. Normally, time frame influences how people communicate a certain concept. For instance, the mode of communication used in the 1800s is totally different from the twentieth centuries (Papps, 67). In this case, the mode of expression is a key factor that is influenced by time. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, most authors used monsters to draft their novels. For instance, in the novel, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, which was written in 1886 encompasses two main characters who have monstrous traits. In this novel, the author portrays these characters to reflect two personas who have some characters that differ from human traits (Stevenson, 70). For instance, the author uses these two monsters to bring the idea of the duality of human nature. In this case, Jekyll is seen as if he possesses two souls "the angel" and "fiend." On the other hand, the current application of monsters has dramatically reduced. Most authors ought to use content from currents issues to draft their novels (Hodgkinson et al, 287). However, those novels that use monsters as their characters are so much bounded on the current issues which affect social development.
Monster comparison
From the information, monsters are associated with some physical traits which are not available in normal human being. In the novel, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, the character Mr. Hyde are seen periodically changing his physical appearances. These physical appearances differentiate Hyde from a normal human being. Normally, every person in society fears monsters because they are associated with some evil and bad traits that no one would wish to be associated with. In the novel, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, the two characters who have monstrous traits are seen associated with evil, and thus, they are physically associated with fear. There are myths which indicate that monsters are key challenges which weakness societies (Stevenson, 85). As such, monsters phobia influence how people associate their characters with current situations. Due to the integration of abnormal actions, stories which use monsters as their characters are so enjoyable. Most readers like following the story to understand which actions the monster will do to at the end of the book (Rabern and Derek, 25). In most cases, the author subjects the monster to challenges which affects their ability and performance. Despite their power and size, the end up suffering under a minor action or character.
Recent Monster Story
The novel, Trail of Lightning, by Rebecca Roanhorse is one of the recent monstrous books. The book engages the gods and heroes of legends that are the main characters. These characters possess monstrous traits (Roanhorse, 97). Roanhorse makes Maggie Hoskie as the character that takes the responsibility of hunting the monster, Dinetah. Dinetah is a superhuman being which has the ability and power to kills people. The town where the story takes place is so much worried about the monster, and thus, they need to find help so that they can find some people who have gone missing (Roanhorse, 46). Maggie who is their only hope says that the giant is so big and dangerous that people could imagine. This perception influence Maggie to look for support from some of the special people in the village such as medicine man. The man accompanies her to go and fight the ancient legend. In the end, Maggie is forced to provoke her past action if she wants to continue living.
In both novels, monsters are used to shows the real traits of some protagonists. Monsters in the two novels share the same characters whereby they engage in evil actions such as killing, and thus, they create rival with other characters in the novel (Roanhorse, 61). This rival creates a boundary that separates these parties. However, due to their power, giants use their ability to harass human beings. For instance, in the book, Trail of Lightning, the giants are associated with the ability to kill people due to their muscular and physical appearances. According to the authors of these books, these monster are seen having cruel intentions which are associated with actions that aim at doing harms to other people (Roanhorse, 300). They are associated with selfish which makes them think that harming all people will give them the ability to control the environment. As such, Maggie tries to combine various important people to form a team which will assist in fighting the monster. Additionally, these giants are great communicators which influence how other members of society interact with them.
Convention Revision
Normally, convention revision is a critical process that writers use to make a certain concept clearer. Cultural and social changes influence an author to draft and change the content to ensure it rhymes with the current situations. Therefore, application of a convention revision helps to change the role of giants and make them looks more advanced as compared to the previous versions. For instance, monster advance books can engage ogres that have the ability to operate computers so as to fulfill their needs. Most research has indicated that the technique is an essential way that helps to improve the quality of a book. In the book, Trail of Lightning, the author shows that the giants have the ability to engage modern techniques which help it to fight people in the town (Roanhorse, 69).
Movie Adaptation
In literature, the movie adaptation has been a critical technique that helps to improve understand because an audience is given a chance to integrate almost all senses. When a person views and reads a certain content, there is a high chance it will be more understood. According to a recent study, video adaption has become an essential dialogic technique. As such, video adaption helps to enhance a person to understand the structure of a novel. They are mostly integrated when readers do not have the ability to integrate various content structures which have been used by authors. Videos help to develop a clear picture of all themes (Rabern and Derek, 78). A video adaption helps to understand and comprehend the setting and plotting of a novel. This helps to understand and follow the environment a book is set. Additionally, video adoption helps to effectively integrate all parts of a movie such as begging, middle, and end in a logical way. As such, a person can effectively understand all the emotional and physical aspects that some characters integrate. For instance, in the movie, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, character Hyde ironically tries to imitate some characters, and thus, readers could easily understand his emotional appearance if a video was adapted.
Other Forms of Monsters
A ghost is a soul of death that is linked with spiritual imagined that exist in the form of vague structure. This spiritual being appears to the living in different means such as an animal or person. Additionally, spiritual beings vary based on how they appear because they even may occur on invisible presence, translucent, and much more. According to most studies, ghosts are believed to occur afterlife as they try to manifest the spirits of the dead. The appearance of a ghost is the major factor that can be used to differentiate with other forms of a monster. In comparison with a giant, a ghost appears in a structure which cannot be clearly visible. On the other hand, a giant appears larger than normal but possesses human or animal traits. On the other hand, both ghost and giants have the ability to communicate as they use language that people can understand. Through communication, these monsters are able to communicate their feeling freely. Additionally, they target at harming people, especially those that violate a certain social rule. For instance, a ghost may appear when a person fails to fulfill all requirements that the deceased had enacted before their death. In this case, they appear at night; thus, affecting the person who has violated the rule. Additionally, these monsters appear regularly at a certain location, and they may destroy human structures to signify their presence. The comparison helps to understand and differentiate different forms of monster that occur in the world. As such, comparison can help to develop techniques which can help to reduce their effects.
