Evidence from well-designed studies, clinical expertise, patient preferences and values have been used to create practice models that carter for the patients using a problem-solving approach. The use of an evidence-based practice model ensures that the patient gets the best up to date care and improves the health and safety of the patient.
One of the models that have been adopted is The Johns Hopkins Evidence-Based Model. This is a three-step model designed to meet the needs of a practicing nurse while offering solutions to the needs of the patient (Newhouse, Dearholt, Poe, Pugh & White, 2007). The three steps of the model are abbreviated as P.E.T. The first step abbreviated as P, is the Practice question involves five steps, these are: Identifying the question, defining the scope of the question, assigning leadership responsibility, recruiting a multidisciplinary team, and calling for a conference.
The E in the model is for the evidence. There are also five steps in evidence collection, conducting an internal and external search, appraising, summarizing, rating, and developing a recommendation for change based on the strength of the evidence (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2015).
The third step, T, is for the translation of evidence. This involves determining appropriateness and feasibility of translations into the practice, creating an action plan, implementing the change, evaluating the outcome and reporting to the decision-makers, securing support from the decision-makers, identifying the next steps, and communicating the findings (Newhouse, Dearholt, Poe, Pugh & White, 2005).
Evidence-based practice is key to quality and excellence in nursing service. The JHEBP model provides for nurses the platform to learn, develop their skills in nursing leadership, and provide quality healthcare services to the patients that they come into contact with. In cooperating, the evidence-based practice into the daily nursing routine is therefore essential for the delivery of quality healthcare.
