Human services are an interdisciplinary field centred on prevention and rectifying problems, to improve the quality of life of the serviced population (De las Fuentes et al., 205). One thing I learned was about ethics and how it is incorporated. For instance, human service professionals are employed in many different settings such as children and youth service agencies, community mental health centres, group homes and correctional facilities among others (De las Fuentes et al., 2005).

The personalized nature of their work dictates that they follow a specific code of ethics. This code of ethics is intended to institute standards for their practice and guard the rights and dignity of the clients as well as the workers. Another lesson learned is that ethical dilemmas often come up as the human service professionals carry out their duties (Kong 2013). Since an individual’s well-being and freedom are at stake deciphering ethical dilemmas takes a systemic approach that consolidates both moral philosophies and gives precedence to the set ethical guidelines.

Human service professionals must prioritize their client’s safety, integrity and security (De las Fuentes et al., 2005). This includes obtaining informed consent for the provision of services at the start of a relationship. They should protect the clients’ right to confidentiality with the exception that privacy may cause harm to the client or others (Kong 2013). Multiple relationships between the client and the worker are prohibited to avoid bias, exploitation of clients and impairing the worker’s judgment.

Human service professionals work with clients from diverse backgrounds (kong, 2013). The workers should comprehend and be aware of multiculturalism in the society they work in and how individuals are impacted within the community. The workers are therefore expected to offer services without biases based on ethnicity, race, gender, religion, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation and others (Kong 2013). The workers should stay informed about prevailing social issues since they affect the clients’ management.

Another lesson is that the Ethical Standards for Human Service Professionals highlights that values such as confidentiality, freedom, rules and property are foregone for the client’s well-being (De las Fuentes et al., 2005). When faced with dilemmas, professionals are required to search for suitable supervision and consultation to aid in decision-making (Kong 2013). Consideration for and adherence to the Ethical Standards for Human Service Professionals is paramount.

Conclusion

The human service professional, ethical standards are necessary and useful when making vital decisions. As known, human service professionals work with clients from diverse backgrounds. That is why people should treat others without biases based on ethnicity, race, gender, religion, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, and others. The workers are therefore expected to offer services without preferences based on ethnicity, race, gender, religion, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, and others
