Introduction
The character Ralph in Lord of Flies stands in for leadership, the well civilized and socialized young individual. He is charismatic, attractive, and knowledgeable; he visualizes the usual common sense. Ralph organizes the fire, huts, and the conference place. He analyzes and exerts the intellectualism of Piggy, and he identifies the assumed terror and assumptions as barriers to their existence. Ralph is a born leader and a diplomat. Golding, through Ralph's character, represents civilization since he has a well-ordered government compared to Jack's savagery.
Ralph shows he an orderly leader when he sees fire and says, "If we have a signal going, they'll come and take us off. And another thing. We ought to have more rules. Where the conch is, that's a meeting. The same up here as down there"(Golding 52). It shows his capability to lead and establish guidelines to uphold order. It is also an indicator of his commitment to achieve rescue and bring back civilization.
Ralph's leadership capabilities are identified from the start, considering he was the only leader in charge of the boys. Ralph uses caution and sense to handle the calamity developed by the death sight of a paratrooper. His able leadership keeps his team's hopes high. The story shows how Ralph decided to go and have a look at the castle rock alone, despite having fears of the beats. Ralph showed the act of politeness when Simon said that the belief doesn't exist. Ralph politely replies to him, as if in agreement about the condition of the atmosphere (Al-Yassiry 483-489).
Initially, he had a romantic view towards the long-awaited Island adventure, but the character losses the excitement about their freedom along the way and longs for the peace of being home. He engages in home images, the recollection of comfort life of cream and cereals, and kid's book he was familiar with. He fantasizes about grooming and bathing. Ralph's early life had been civilized, and he had come to the Island with strength and expectations until specific encounters comprehended his naiveté and took away his innocence. With increased group meetings, he gains experience, but over time, he gets bored with their discourse as not everyone follows through with what they agreed to do (Li 2019).
Ralph begins to lose the strength of developed thoughts over time, for instance, when he flounders to start a plan for the magnitude but finds himself lost in wild thoughts. He losses communication abilities, which affects the members because his power lies in the forum. Ralph's mental skills affect the similar decay as his clothes; the hard-primitive experience unravels both. In response to the calamity of the lost chance to rescue, he shows his capacities as a great thinker.
Ralph discovers decay and dirt, which symbolizes the dark side of humans. The discovery educates him of reason, empathy, sensitivity, and intellect as tools for slowing down evil. The character is the only individual to know that Simon's death is murder and has a frank, realistic perspective of his engagement. He comments," Cos I had some sense" after becoming a prey, discovering that he is an outcast. Towards the end of the book, the character meets an officer on the beach, he is not overwhelmed for being helped from the death but discomforted over" his unpleasant look," a clear indication that his civility had persevered his encounter. (Shumaila Mahza 31-39).
Conclusion
The writer represents civilization through Ralph because the character has established great leadership compared to Jack's savagery. He demonstrates orderliness when he notices the mountain on fire and educates the boys about the signal. The character goes ahead to showcase his leadership skills by suggesting that they should set more regulations and arrange for meetings. The above scenario shows his concern for maintaining order in the Island and his determination to rescue and attain civilization on the Island.
