Introduction

According to Simpson (2013), the key objective of hospital information technology is to focus on the administration needs of the hospital, purposely ensuring the smooth running of operations within the facility. The goal is achieved through constant cooperation between nurses and patients at the same time. As observed by Simpson (2015), the longevity of healthcare organizations, nurses, and quality patient care can be imperiled by failing to respond to nursing’s needs with advanced specific technologies and systems. For correct identification and implementation of appropriate technologies and systems, executive nurses, nurse practitioners, nurse leaders, nurse educators, and graduate-level nurses have to work together.

Lifelong Learning for Executive Nurses

Executive nurses are supposed to commit to lifelong learning to participate and actively lead HIT decision making since it helps in acquiring the needed qualifications for providing care in different societies during the global pandemic (Qalehsari et al., 2017). Also, committing to lifelong learning improves executive nurses’ technological knowledge that further helps improve patients' outcomes, increased satisfaction, reduce error chances, and decrease mortality rates during a global pandemic (Qalehsari et al., 2017). It also improves their knowledge of workflow design and process mapping (Simpson, 2015). For instance, the research conducted by Simpson (2013) found out that the executive nurses limited their capacity in advocating for required technology in supporting nursing practice in selecting and evaluating clinical information systems.

Extending the Objective to Other Nurses

The objective of lifelong learning should be extended to the other nurses, including nurse practitioners, nurse educators, nurse leaders, and other graduate-level nurse roles if they have to participate and actively lead HIT decision making. Getting more knowledge will ensure fully understand workflow design and mapping. According to Sharp (2009, p. 84), an effective workflow has to define the individuals to perform specific responsibilities and measurable goals. The information will increase their understanding of a process, plan projects, and offer process documentation (Lucid Software, 2018). For instance, through learning craftsmen became experts in their performance, and the knowledge helped them understand the customer, mastered the whole process, customized products and service, and no miscommunication (Sharp & McDermott, 2009). Besides, learning will help them to further detect changes in patient's health, evaluate responses to treatments and medications, and consult with healthcare professionals. Through the acquired knowledge, they can also train patients and families to manage a pandemic. It will make them more concerned about mentoring the next generation of nurses through designing academic programs in their various institutions per state’s nursing regulations and using current technology.

Rationale

In HIT global pandemic containment decision making, all the different nurses, including nurse executives, nurse practitioners, nurse educators, nurse leaders, and other graduate-level nurses, role-play an essential role after getting the required education. If these nurses commit to lifelong learning for them to participate and actively lead HIT decision making, then there will be improved ways of handling a global pandemic. Through them, a new health system can be established to help deal with a global pandemic. Thus, it will improve the excellent performance of clinics and even nursing homes. It means that the decisions they make will change lives for a long period.
