Introduction
Communication is the basis of many things, including interpersonal relationships (Juneja, 2020). Communication is critical as it allows both parties to reveal their intentions and avoid misunderstandings. Over time, the bond between the parties becomes stronger, and it leads to a better relationship. In group tasks, communication is vital for the group to achieve its objectives, and for the group members to understand one another and come to a decision.
Scenario 1
In the first scenario, the group needs to involve speakers fluent in English to deliver the utmost professionalism. Also, we need to develop cross-cultural competency, i.e., the ability to understand and communicate with people from other cultures. Learning about the culture and customs of different cultures tends to be useful and practical when interacting with people from other cultures ("Developing cross-cultural competence is an essential key to communicating | Course Hero,” 2020). In this case, I would encourage our colleagues to give the gifts as it is part of their culture, and it will be a good gesture to the others. Also, since our colleague has limited English-speaking skills, we have to accommodate them in other activities to maintain equality in the group and strengthen the bond.
Scenario 2
For the second scenario, group decisions tend to be easier to make and more acceptable than individual decisions. In group decision-making, more information is brought to the table by the group members leading to a diversity of views. However, group decision-making takes longer compared to individual decisions due to the number of people involved ("Group Decision-Making: its Advantages and Disadvantages," 2020). Small groups are better than bigger groups when it comes to group tasks because the flow of information is quicker in small groups than in larger groups. When dealing with John, since I know he always has hidden agendas, I would designate a specific task for John and make him feel involved instead of challenging the management. Making John feel welcome in the group would help other group members keep a close eye on him.
