The expansion of Medicaid in the Affordable Care Act was a significant element of the legislation because it is expected to offer coverage to low-income earners, a group of people in society that are at higher risk for inequalities in access to high-quality health care systems. Based on recent studies, the expansion of Medicaid can minimize insurance-related inequalities, creating hope around the potential effect of the Affordable Care Act on poor people's health (Lyon, Douglas, and Cooke, 2014). Nevertheless, various hindrances about scarcities within the Medicaid program itself and the implementation of Medicaid's expansion threaten its inceptive impact. This paper will discuss the financial opportunity and challenges of caring for the newly insured under Medicaid.
The financial opportunity offered by the newly insured under Medicaid is that the federal government is covering 90% of the expansion cost in the beginning years of the implementation of ACA. Moreover, based on empirical studies, the Medicaid offers highest benefit to the insured because it will help to reduce instances of uncompensated care costs for clinics and hospitals, something that had been detrimental to many people financially (Antonisse, Garfield, and Rudowitz, 2019). Moreover, individuals that are currently covered have been found to experience a few debt issues and other financial challenges which they suffered before enrollment.
The financial challenge caused by the expansion of Medicaid under ACA is that, based on the Supreme Court ruling of June 2012, the state can decide not to be part of the expansion, and this leaves many eligible people without a proper affordable coverage option. Also, in states like Mississippi, many people without financial stability are not insured, something that has caused them to live without medication coverage for years, forcing them to experience financial challenges whenever they try to seek quality health services (Bigby, 2013). Moreover, healthcare costs continue to increase, and this creates fundamental concern about the health of poor people without financial stability in states that have not accepted to implement of the program.
