Overview of Anorexia

Anorexia is a psychological eating disorder which can be detrimental to human health. Many people who suffer from Anorexia Nervosa usually have extremely low body weight. Body Mass Index is an approach that is used to assess the status of body weight for people who have eating disorder issues. Moreover, practitioners can also use the technique of observing the patterns of eating of an individual, personality characters and exercise models can also indicate symptoms and sign of anorexia nervosa.

Accordingly, those who have anorexia usually have a psychological distortion, and they always have an extensive fear of gaining unwanted weight. They frequently worry about being heavier and bigger than they are (Touyz et al., 2016) Their worry to a significant extreme can lead to depression and in very severe cases even death of an individual.

Types of Anorexia

Restrictive Anorexia:

It entails the practice of denying oneself foodstuff that is rich in carbohydrates, sugar and much more in calories and fats. Presumably, they are considered to be highly stern with their dietary intake. As such, they consume way too little calories as recommended and required to sustain a healthy body.

Purge Anorexia:

It is an outrageous case of anorexia where an individual regurgitates after consuming food with the fear of gaining weight. It promotes the fear of eating unwanted food as per ones' idea of weight gaining.

Anorexia Signs and Symptoms

When one suffers from anorexia, they might indicate one or several of the signs and symptoms. Some of which are inclusive of but not limited to:

Depression

Loss of hair on the head and baldness

Emaciation

Obsession with food

It is not easy to give an accurate figure or statistical information of people suffering from anorexia because many cases go undiagnosed as the victims think it is a normal practice to deny themselves food. Across Canada, the number of people affected varies from 160,000 to 700,000. Correspondingly, 3% of women are affected by anorexia in their lifetime (MacNeil et al., 2016). The prevalence of anorexia is on the rise in the transitional stage from adolescent to young adulthood. In Canada, it has the highest mortality rate among the psychological or mental issues (MacNeil et al., 2016). As such, 10% of individuals diagnosed with anorexia will die within ten t0 fifteen years' time.

Physical Wellness

Anorexia causes the deterioration of the body. It has an adverse effect on individuals body structure as one loses the physique through weight loss. One who has this challenge faces a problem of lack of sleep and sometimes intensive depression leading to nausea and tired body.

Emotional Wellness

Anorexia victims usually lack the proper mindset to balance their emotions and usually have a negative view of themselves knowingly or unknowingly. It causes a feeling of emptiness in tackling the stressors in daily life. In light of this, stress associated with anorexia causes drowsiness, depression and in extreme cases death.

Spiritual Wellness

Spirituality has to do with ones' convictions and beliefs in religious practices. Some individuals have taken advantage of fasting and praying as a scapegoat to avoid food. They overdo the spiritual aspect of fasting as a way to lose the weight they are obsessed with.

Intellectual Wellness

Anorexia shapes individuals are thinking and in long-term effects peoples attitude when it comes to accepting new ideas. It affects personal decision making and causes memory loss due to improper brain development due to lack of proper food.

Environmental Wellness

The environment influences the cause of anorexia. Many of the victims do not like to appear in public places. Also, the victims may also acquire other diseases from an unkempt environment due to their state of depression and lack of participation in the cleaning of their environment.

Occupational Wellness

Anorexia has cause unemployment and lack of productivity in workplaces. Without food, the body becomes weak, and some of the victims lack the strength to deliver as per their required standards in their workplaces.

Social Wellness

It causes lack of happiness, break-ups and many at times it goes along with depression. One suffering from anorexia lacks a sense of love to the people close to them. As such, they develop self-esteem issues with the people close to them.
