Facebook is a social network website, which was first established by Mark Zuckerberg, 2004, while he was still a scholar at Harvard University. The platform allows its operators to form profiles and thereafter provide information about their life, hobbies, and interests, which can either be made public or private depending on an individual`s preference on their privacy status. Consequently, a person can like pages, request for friendship, as well as share articles with friends. Since the establishment of the website, it is one of the most popular platforms that attract individuals of all age-groups from different parts of the world. Whereas opponents argue that Facebook is bad for a college student since it makes use of time that should be used in studying, proponents, on the other hand, believe that Facebook is not bad for college students because the platforms provide opportunity for scholars to interact and share knowledge.
To begin with, Facebook is not bad for college students because it provides a platform where individuals interact and share knowledge concerning education. In addition, the website provides tutors with teaching and blending materials that aids in tutoring the students such as discussion boards, blogs, and recordings for a lecture. Apparently, Facebook provides a platform where students can easily access relevant academic materials (Irwin, Ball, Desbrow, & Leveritt, 2012). In essence, the social network provides an environment that engages the scholars and the tutors as well as enriching the quality of education experienced by students through interactive learning.
In the current generation, students spend most of their time outside school duration in social media such as Facebook. Thus, using Facebook to supplementing classwork seems to be affiliated with the present-day trend. Furthermore, due to the globalization of the social media, English is the dominating mode of communication amongst the young people despite not being their native language. Hence, Facebook can be used in supporting instruction in the English language especially to individuals using English as a foreign language. The incorporation of English in Facebook may make learning become more appealing to scholars and hence improve their academic performance (Espinosa, 2015).
On the other hand, it will be difficult for teachers to engage and motivate scholars using Facebook because students are always ahead of the tutors when it comes to social technology. In addition, it is challenging to make a distinction between intellectual engagement and entertainment. The nature of social media can easily hold students captive, which can also interfere with cognitive learning that is critical for a student during learning. Teachers should ascertain that incorporating Facebook in learning will help scholars in understanding the required concept (Espinosa, 2015).
To conclude, although Facebook has both advantages and disadvantages to a college student, the pros outweigh the cons. Some of the benefits include: it provides a platform where students interact and share knowledge concerning education. Also, the website provides tutors with teaching and blending materials that aids in tutoring the students such as discussion boards, blogs, and recordings for a lecture. Furthermore, Facebook can be used in supporting the understanding of instruction in the English language especially to individuals using English as a foreign language since English is the dominating language used by youngsters as a mode of communication. Therefore, I believe that Facebook is not bad for college students.
