I communicated with two of my best friends who live abroad one through text messaging while the other through video calls inquiring about their new workplace. The messenger communication was lively and had explicit content with the influence of nonverbal responses and facial expressions using emoji. The use of emojis is used to improve the nuance and accuracy of misunderstood messages hence establishing nonverbal cues. Bevan (2020) refers to facial expressions as the capability to generate a variety of emotions from very subtle to dramatic and may include sadness, happiness, and anger. In the video chat, our communication was dry and had little content as her responses were quick without the utilization of nonverbal feedback or enunciation. The text messages took approximately two minutes long to provide feedback while the video call took one minute as it felt no difference communicating face to face. In all of the two conversations I made, I found text messaging to be my favorite.
Step 2: Basic Principles of Effective Communication, Ideas of the Self, or Culture
From fundamental communication principles, I have understood that creating and upholding healthy relations are essential to a healthy life. Building a healthy relationship is maintaining a significant connection with other people. According to Bevan (2020), human communication aims to aid individuals in developing and sharing their views, emotions, experiences, and principles. I always establish connections with people over time by enhancing communication to bring us closer. The use of non-verbal and verbal messages depends on the method we get to interpret the information. However, people can utilize words to communicate and establish relations, and face-to-face connections seem more effective than non-verbal messaging (Morris-Brown, 2016, 01:42). Every individual has their preferences for communication according to what they consider quick and most comfortable; for instance, some people find it speaking rather than texting. The standard choice can have a drastic influence on the efficacy and interpretation of a message. Self-disclosure is essential in creating relations, helping people learn about themselves and other individuals (Bevan, 2020). Thus, without constant nonverbal and verbal cues in existing associations, we would not have the capability to understand other people.
Week 2
Step 1: Violating Nonverbal Cultural Norm
Later this week, while at the store, I made a wrong direction when queuing for service. After realizing this, I picked my items and walked hurriedly, trying not to make any eye contact with the people around to avoid embarrassments. The typical belief is that when making a line in the store, there is a specific procedure to follow to avoid going in the wrong direction. The non-verbal communication linked to this test is proxemics or personal space (Bevan, 2020). After some time, one develops the correct method to perform things by perceiving the surrounding environment.
Step 2: Basic Principles, Ideas of the Self, or Culture
I have learned that nonverbal communication is significant in conversation as it informs other people regarding one’s intentions, actions, and thoughts. According to Bevan (2020), when communicating with other people, our attention focuses on the aspects of the communicator’s voice, environment, body language, and physical distance. When having multicultural communication, one may incline to be ethnocentric, believing that their culture or way of communication is paramount (Bevan, 2020). One of the most vital skills of proficient correspondents in this different and globalized realm is to identify that most features of cultures are diverse from one another (Morris-Brown, 2016, 01:45). Understanding diverse cultures help a person communicate efficiently.
Week 3
Step 1: Relationship Maintenance
My best friend and I have formed a robust relationship for almost eight years. We established our relationship through trust and sharing educational as well as inspirational experience. According to Bevan (2020), assurance, advice, and openness form positive relation conduct that exhibits to other people. We share everything concerning our life matters and our career success hence motivating each other to work hard for a good outcome.
a) Openness: as trust develops, we tend to feel comfortable sharing values, feelings, and thoughts. The sharing procedure incline to be reciprocal as we feel relaxed conveying information.
b) Advice: Sharing our life experiences and emotions gives us the chance to offer suggestions or opinions based on the situations. Our recommendations tend to have excellent views of building our success.
c) Assurance: articulating commitment and emotional support offers us to develop our relationship to have a better future together.
Distinct relationships need various kinds of communication. Close relationships offer us the freedom to use nonverbal communication, just like when talking to my best friend. However, an association with a friend from the community might necessitate more verbal communication as the connection is not as intimate as with a close friend or a spouse.
Step 2: Basic Principles, Ideas of the Self, or Culture
Relationship maintenance is crucial to maintaining a strong association, free from conflict with an open channel of communication. Establishing a close relational connection is one of the most gratifying experiences of the world around us. I have learned more regarding the significance of being an active listener, as it shows more empathy to the people in the environment. To create an intimate connection, every individual must have the capability of showing the other people their empathetic feeling and offer excellent support (Bevan, 2020). When people pursue social support, they anticipate obtaining empathy and sympathy as they give the impression that close people care about them (Bevan, 2020). Relationship maintenance involves a lot of effort and determination from both parties to help in the upkeep of the bond. We must comprehend that everybody in our relations has diverse needs, as this will help us preserve every relationship. Close associations are the most satisfying and rewarding for individuals. These sorts of positive conducts can identify the length and power of the association. Also, providing the first impression could create the most substantial influence when starting a relationship. Cabane (2011, 01:28), states that a person can establish a great first impression within two seconds. People still have an opportunity to redeem themselves if their first impression was not appealing. An individual’s body language explains a lot regarding a face-to-face interface between people. Thus we should establish these connections and relations with individuals as it builds interpersonal communication with other people.
Week 4
Step 1: Relationship Equity
I had an old close friend in the workplace when after a short period, I found that I was an unbalanced relationship. We immediately became intimate the moment we knew each other very well. Our friendship led us to the situation we could meet each other over the weekends for picnics where she could come with a few of her friends. The bond she had with her friends made me feel under benefited in the association. As I reflect on this experience, my inadequate communication made me feel unworthy in the relationship. Bevan (2020), states that the deployment of conflict management attempts to restore equity in an intimate relationship. I could have used a verbal message to tell my friend on what I found unfair to me; or utilize a non-verbal communication, such as a scowl, to inform them regarding my problem. I believe relationship equity is vital for all the involved parties. Thus, an individual’s drive to remain in any relationship is founded on the equality made to the rapport by every person and the capability to use nonverbal and verbal communication to express feelings and emotions.
Step 2: Basic Principles, Ideas of the Self, or Culture
Conflict management is the procedure of restraining the negative features of encounters while augmenting the positive characteristics. As a close friend to my workmate, my reward was to show equity to me as their member. Tackling this exercise has enabled me to learn more regarding the notions of the self and methods to sustain negative relations. Conflict management, which utilizes positive and productive conduct to resolution battles with a person, seems to be the most effective method to resolve differences within a relationship (Bevan, 2020). Communicating through contrary rapport maintenance is connected to minimized commitment, respect, and responsibility sharing. We cannot exercise compassion with people if we do not treat ourselves kindly (Brown 2010, 09:06). Self-kindness is performing kind deeds and comprehending methods towards ourselves; however, some people regard benevolence as being vulnerable. Though kindness seems susceptible, positively expressing this vulnerability can result in a willingness to display distinct life aspects allowing us to link with individuals on various levels. Using voice typology helps individuals solve issues and propose solutions. When expressing one’s thoughts and emotions in response to a severe condition, a person hopes to get attention and validation from the other partner. With the appropriate support, undertaking the struggles linked with susceptibility can turn to power.
