Introduction

American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) and the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) are the two bodies certified for Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) National certification. ANCC is internationally known for its crediting programs that certify and more precisely recognize nurses in different specialty practice areas, including FNP. The ANCC has an FNP certification examination board that provides competency based exams to students that is a logical and authentic assessment for all the new-level clinical skills and knowledge of nurse specialities. Its certifications precisely align with the model for APRN regulations for education, certification, accreditation, and licensure (APEA Staff, 2019).

ANCC requires all the APRN candidates to complete 75 continuing education hours with a mandatory 25 continuing education hours of pharmacotherapeutics. The initial certification costs vary with non-members paying $395 and American Nurse Association members $295. The ANCC exam questions focus on clinical content, nursing theory, and professional issues practice (APEA Staff, 2019). The body offer certification to approximately 29 nursing specialties, including Nursing care management, adult Nurse Practitioner, Informatics Nursing, among others.

Professional Membership Organization

The AANP, on the other hand, remains to be the largest full service national professional membership organization for Nursing practitioners and all nursing specialties. The AANP certification of FNP is accredited by the Accreditation Board of Specialty Nursing certification. The body requires one to complete not less than 1,000 hours of clinical practice, and a minimum of 100 contact hours (APEA Staff, 2019). The AANP members pay a testing fee of $240 while the non-members $315, which is relatively cheaper as compared to ANCC. The FNP exam only focuses on clinical content. Other certifications available include Emergency Nurse Practitioner and Adult-gerontology primary care nurse practitioner.

The Florida Board of Nursing is responsible for licensing advanced practice nursing in my state. All specialties of APRN are required to provide valid proof of National Certification when applying for a license in my state (Nursing License Map, 2020). The board does not have a specific timeline but usually processes applications from the day they are received. All the necessary documentations have to be verified by applications a fully processed.

Conclusion

Thus, applicants should have a master’s degree or higher in nursing and a 2-hour board-certified course in medical error prevention (Nursing License Map, 2020). Registered Nurses in Florida pay a $110 fee, $210 for licensure as RN and APRN, and dispensing license for prescriptive Authority fee of $100. I plan to certify with AANP since it’s relatively cheaper and has its content solely focused on clinical content with questions well distributed over evaluation, planning, diagnosis, and patient assessment.
