This paper shall analyze the similarities and differences between the above articles concerning the wind that blew a section of the US-Mexico border fence.
Summary of Facts
The two articles derived from the websites of bbc.co.uk and dailymail.co.uk gives information on the winds that toppled a section of Trump's border fence. According to the Daily Mail, the headline reads as "Wind topples a new section of Donald Trump's Border Wall." The article posits that a strong gust caused the metal fence to barrel into trees on the wall during construction. The article writes that some portion fell in Mexicali, which is about 130ft long. The article reports that high winds toppled the portion of Trump's border wall on Wednesday (Dailymail.com). Carlos Pitones who works as an agent with the Californian Custom and Border Protection department in El Centro caption the parts that felt. The article claim that the portion of the wall that felt is set in a new concrete foundation in Calexico. The idea was that the concrete was not cured making the panel vulnerable to protect the weak wall. The article based those mentioned above claimed on the research made by the National Weather Service which revealed that the winds had reached a 37mph on Wednesday. According to the Daily mail, construction is suspended in the area to allow cleanup to take place (Dailymail.com).
The BBC headline read as "Trump's Wall: Winds blow over a section of US-Mexico border fence." BBC reported that the steel panels from the fence in Calexico, California, were toppled on Wednesday morning. The BBC reveals that the panel that felt was about 30ft and the concrete to anchor it had not been set. On that Wednesday morning, a gust of about 30mph was reported as claimed by the United States National Weather Service. The article further elaborates on these concepts that the fence was Trump's administration's ongoing project to prevent illegal migration across 3145 KM in the southern border ("Strong wind blows over part of Trump's border wall"). The high wind blew some section of installed panels into trees across Mexicali city' roads, Mexico. The BBC reports that Carlos Pitones, a US border patrol agent, told LA times that Mexican authorities responded quickly to divert traffic in the neighboring street.
Analysis
From the facts, the BBC and Daily Mail share some differences and similarities. In essence, the framing of the headline is similar. The two articles recognize the Us-Mexico border fence as Trump's wall. The BBC acknowledges Carlos Pitones as a US Border Patrol agent whereas, the Daily Mail is specific by displaying him as an agent of Custom and Border Protection in El Centro, California, US. The reporting on the speed on the wind is different. The BBC claims that the speed was 30mph, whereas Daily Mail reported 37mph. The same difference also holds in the length of the panels that fell.
