Cloud Computing is a technology in which different users are able to access computing facilities from a single multi-provider who normally has the requisite infrastructure and or software and vends them out for a fee. The technology has evolved over the years as a hybrid of different technologies that are looped together to provide services such as Software as a Service (Saas), Platform as a Service (PaaS) and Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS). Individuals, academics and enterprises choose the services best suited to them and purchase them in an as-needed basis, which forms the attractiveness of Cloud Computing. Issues arising out of cloud computing are similar to those experienced by any other internet based provider, which are security, reliability and availability. With the ever-increasing use of Cloud Computing by enterprises to conduct business activities, these pertinent issues are more important than ever.

Introduction

Cloud Computing is a relatively new entrant into the world of internet technologies aiming to make life easier for humans by providing users with data storage services in means of their choice. Being a new-age product, Cloud Computing is picking up great popularity, with its use being highly favored among small businesses, people, academics and schools, and numerous other institutions, all seeking better services than they have access to.

The growth of cloud computing has been contributed to by several technologies, which have both evolved and matured and undergone developments over a period of years, finally becoming a hybrid of open APIs, infrastructure, new means of computing and storage of data, especially in huge volumes. The greatest composition of cloud computing services are to small businesses, which require high performance of their systems but lack the means to purchase the required hardware or software for themselves.

It is also being used greatly as a cost-reduction tool, with the ability to purchase server hours as the business requires them, rather than having a fixed supply. In a normal operations scenario where the business operates its own servers, the curve of peak server needs and off-peak server usage creates wastage in either of two ways: Using the off-peak requirements to create the server infrastructure creates under-provisioning, meaning that the peak time requirements will clog the system and possibly cause delays and loss of business. Setting the server hours at the peak time requirements create the opposite scenario, in which over-provisioning creates a surplus of server hours during off-peak season, creating wastage of resources.

To make cloud computing suitable for use in business, where customers need to be assured of supply of the business product/service at all times, and business need to operate at full potential at all times, three pertinent issues need to be addressed for cloud computing to fulfill its roles. These issues are security, availability and reliability, and without them, cloud computing cannot fulfill its role of being the best alternative in data and information storage.

Security

Due to the increasing popularity of cloud computing, emerging concerns users are having to contend with include undesirable internet marauders such as worms, viruses, hackers and financially motivated cyber-terrorists. As more people move into the cloud computing avenues, these undesirables take advantage of vulnerabilities and exploit them for personal gain. Providers will therefore need to up their protection systems to ensure that their clients’ data is safe, which will in turn lead to skyrocketing of costs of cloud computing prices.

The main types of applications that are available are classified according the service being offered. The different types of services also have different security concerns that stem from the structures that are put in place to make them accessible to multiple users.

These types of providers offer applications hosted on the network that lets customers enjoy the software they most require without having to buy them. Platform as a Service (PaaS)

Users who just need to utilize applications that are more capable than what they have presently can contact cloud computing providers of the PaaS caliber to remotely access application, either independently or still using the provider’s machines, and without having to install the applications themselves. Also suitable for short periods of use or intermittent use, where purchase would lead to underutilization, or when there is need to use more capable applications than the user has, and they require more capacity.

Users should however be advised that PaaS has some underlying security concerns associated with it, which emerge mostly from the activities of the provider such as third-party relationships they may have with other providers. Individuals and businesses are also expected to choose the best service to purchase from the cloud out of the SaaS, PaaS and IaaS available. The choice is supposed to be the one most suited to their needs, and for business, the one that will best ensure that profit maximization is possible.
