In the year 1988, George Bush who was Reagan's Vice president was elected president and the following year the US troops invaded Panama, ousted its government and arrested its leader for drug trafficking. Later in 1991, the US forces played a vital role in the war against Iraq due to its invasion of Kuwait and this ended up with the removal of the Iraq troops from the country (Lavender, 2015). In the year 1992, the Democratic Party clinched the presidency and Bill Clinton was elected president and the Congress passed North America Free Trade Agreement that aimed at creating a free-trade bloc among the North American countries of Canada, US, and Mexico. In the year 1966 Bill Clinton was re-elected president of the US and later in the year 1998, he was involved in a purported sexual scandal with a white house worker leading to impeachment proceedings at the Congress ("United States profile," 2018).

In the year 2001, President George Bush of the Republican Party won the elections and the following year on the 11th day of September, coordinated suicide attacks were done to the US leading to the declaration of the "war on terror" that included the invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan. Later in November 2002, President Bush signed into law the creation of the Department of Homeland Security whose role was to protect the US against terrorist attacks. In the year 2003, the war to topple the Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein. President Bush was re-elected in the year 2004 ("United States profile," 2018). In the year 2006, millions of immigrants demonstrated against the plan to criminalize illegal immigrants and later in May Zacarias Moussaoui was sentenced to life imprisonment for the September 11 attacks.

In one of the most dramatic events in the development of democracy in the US since the award of citizenship to immigrants and specifically the black Americans, Barack Obama was elected the first Black president of the US in November 2008. In the year 2008, the US forces killed Al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden in Pakistan marking a vital step in curbing terrorism. In the year 2012, Barack Obama was re-elected by a narrow margin against the Republican Candidate Mitt Romney ("United States profile," 2018).

In the year 2014, the Republicans win a Senate majority mid-term elections thus giving the party control of both houses and this reduced the levels of President Obama's maneuver. This strategy is what led to the winning of the presidency by the Republican Candidate Donald Trump in the year 2016. Disregarding the efforts against discrimination, President Trump has been seen to give executive orders that are discriminative such as the ban for Muslims to enter the US. In December 2017, the US recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and announces plans to build its embassy in the city and this act prompted discomfort among Arab countries. In March this year, president Trump accepted the offer to meet North Korean Kim Jong-un and the meeting happens on the 12th of June 2018 at a swanky Singapore hotel which became the first ever face to face meeting between sitting presidents of these nations (Elbasha, 2018).
