Fast or unhealthy food such as soda's, junk, sweets among other sugary and high cholesterol foodstuff have been the dominant contributors of diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and obesity among other lifestyle conditions. There are a lot of controversies surrounding whether the food should be highly taxed to reduce its consumption, but an agreement has not been reached although in certain places such as Mexico and Hungary the food is highly taxed. In the United States of America the percentage increase in the number of persons getting diseases emanating from fast food have heightened and among the suggestions to help people cut down the consumption of such cooking is through heavy taxation. It is evident that consumers always rush for foods that are cheap because of the low income and high cost of living. The paper will explore the reasons why fast or unhealthy foods should be heavily taxed.
Fast or unhealthy food should be highly taxed by the government because it will help in reducing the number of people consuming such foods. When the feeds are taxed the consumers will decrease, and this will help people live healthy lives as they will consume less of the foods and more of healthy diets. When people live healthily due to cut down on junk the health care costs will be lowered, and this will not only benefit individuals, but also the government expenditure on health issues will go down. The high tax rates on such unhealthy foods will also help the government raise a right amount of revenue to be used in other pressing matters that require funds.
Besides by taxing unhealthy foods companies will reduce the production of such and look for ways of satisfying consumer demands but with healthier foods because they need to make profits and keep the companies in business. When the tax is imposed on both the companies and consumers great impact will be achieved as less will be produced and consumed by individuals.
On the contrary, unhealthy foods should not be taxed because it may not be a direct solution to health problems because people are solely responsible for taking care of their bodies and regulating what they eat. Similarly, high taxes on unhealthy foods will majorly affect those with low incomes. The low-income earners will suffer because in the United States of America those with little earnings tend to consume junk food as it is considered relatively affordable. The food should not be taxed because the impact that it will have on the health of people will not be significant because individuals can still eat other foods that are not healthy. It is therefore essential to note that fast food taxing is not a strong solution to the robust concerns.
In conclusion, fast foods need to be highly taxed by the government because it will help in reducing the number of people consuming such foods. When the meals are taxed the consumers will decrease, and this will help people live healthy lives as they will consume less of the foods and more of healthy diets. When people live healthily due to cut down on junk the health care costs will be lowered, and this will not only benefit individuals, but also the government expenditure on health issues will go down. The high tax rates on such unhealthy foods will also help the government raise a right amount of revenue to be used in other pressing matters that require funds. Regardless of controversies surrounding whether unhealthy foods should be taxed people should not expect much changes in their health because they are solely responsible for maintaining healthy eating and lifestyles.
