The issue of peaceful parenting is one that has continuously soared a lot of debate. While many parents want their children to have a successful academic life, they still want them to have a good social life. Hence, parents tend to give their children some form of freedom that makes them comfortable in their external environment. Often, there is confusion among parents since they think if they stop disciplining their children, they will do whatever they want. In a real sense, there are two decisions a parent has over their children: either being permissive or being punitive. I'm afraid I have to disagree with the statement, "These days, children spend more time on doing homework or participating in organized activities related to school or sports. However, they should be given more time to do whatever they want”. I believe that the best way of approaching peaceful parenting is by offering your expectations to the children through guidance. At the same time, parents should create some time for their children to explore their abilities and capabilities in the outside world. Hence, for one to be peaceful and positive with their children, there are several ways they should be approached.
First, parents should stay calm when they are handling their children, especially during any misunderstandings. When one finds themselves fighting with their children, they should stay calm since I not possible for children to control themselves. Research shows that having control over breathing keeps one calm in tense situations. Control of breathing also helps one to restructure and rethink on the necessary measures of controlling the situation. In exercising calmness, the parent should combine it with empathy to enable the child to feel understood. Empathy makes a child listen and understand you since you also giving them a listening ear.
Secondly, parents need to establish a close and comfortable relationship between them and their children. The association between them should surpass the parent-children relationship and should entail a lot of friendship. Therefore, a parent needs to increase the time they spend with their kids to connect more. This reduces cases of defiance and increases trust and cooperation between the parents and children. In a close relationship, parents should renounce punishment. They should learn to give their children instructions without issuing threats and punishment in the event of disobedience. Children sometimes learn how to cop up with punishment, and hence if we live on punishing them, we will not be creating a self-controlled individual.
On the other hand, parents need to look for a win-win solution every time they encounter their children. As much as parents feel they are always right and need not be controlled, it is sometimes important for the parent to satisfy their children's desires. This can be a bit tricky, but parents should clear their concerns and approach every situation positively. Finally, welcoming of a melt-down is another important component of peaceful parenting. Parents should exercise kindness, set-up clear limits, and summon all their compassions in such situations. This gives the child a comfort zone when they are in trouble. The child knows there is safety when they show their fears and tears.
The current modern generations have been characterized by a lot of technology that has changed parental rearing patterns. The issues of children's rights and individualism are also being advocated, unlike the old times when parental rearing was communal. Therefore, parents need to exercise peaceful parenting, which combines empathy and discipline at the same time.
