"Scars: a Life in Injuries" by David Owen
In his essay "Scars: a Life in Injuries," David Owen is writing about the story of a young man who is scarred "I have two similar marks, made by metal pins that a surgeon inserted on either side of the broken wrist when I was in college" (40). The young man is reminiscing on the quality memories underlying either of his scar "...your body becomes a kind of historical document, in which certain dramatic moments are memorialized in scar tissue" (40). Over the years we may acquire some scars as we become of age. The young man treasures the memories by suggesting scars are not to be viewed as a bad thing, but they are present to give our lives meaning and purpose; hence we should treasure our scars. We should always consider a scar as a story to learn valuable lessons from. The reason is that each of the scars we acquire as we grow older has a hidden meaning, and it is our duty to unravel the meaning of our benefit. Acknowledging our scars will enable us to be proud of them irrespective of the circumstances in which we got them. Moreover, your scar may serve as a lesson to another person who may relate to your experience and be able to change their life.
"Cat Person" by Kristen Roupenian
In her short story "Cat Person," Kristen Roupenian writes about a student in college narrating her story of when she painfully declines to engage in a continued sexual relationship with an older man, Robert. The narrator tells of the memories when the man inappropriately massages her body. The sexual experience is the kind in which any girl may never want to recall the memories of what transpires when Margot thought "This is the worst life decision I have ever made!" (46). The story describes the experiences of female victims who find themselves in the hands of men who mistreat them. Women who have fallen victims of such men consider their memories painful and hard to bear. Many women today have come across Roberts in their life, many dislike the experiences and egoistic natures of their violators, consequently, wish not to relive the moments. The norm in the society has been women to be considered as meek individuals, who are to be subordinate and treasure the men. The young college student felt violated and considered to be less significant by Robert who used her anyhow he wanted, he also goes ahead and sends her a text message calling her a whore. The society characterizes masculinity by exercising authority over the female gender, especially when it comes to bedroom matters.
"Cat Person" and "Scars: a Life in Injuries"
In life, we encounter many challenges some pleasant others unpleasant that last us through our lifetime. Margot experiences such an unpleasant memory in her young college years; a memory that she does not want which to relieve. Likewise, in the story "Scars" tells of a man having a memory of the injuries he has encountered throughout his life. However, the young man takes these memories positively and is proud to have them. Therefore, memories are made for the sole purpose of learning from them. The experiences may, however, not be a lesson for us, but to individuals who can learn useful lessons as a result of our misfortunes. The two stories bring us to the realization that memories should give our lives a new purpose.
