Self-control is an aspect of self-management, which includes taking responsibility for individual well-being and behavior. It is described as the aspect of inhibitory control. It is the ability of an individual to control his or her thoughts, emotions, and behavior when they encounter impulses and temptations. Self-control is regarded as an executive function. In this case, it is described as a cognitive process that is primary for regulating the behavior of an individual to attain particular goals. Ms. Smith demonstrates the highest level of self-control as it is presented in the case. She controls her behavior and emotions when she learns the response from Dr. Jones. She had called him to ask for orders and understand the condition of Mrs. Ford. However, Drs. Jones is upset, and Ms. Smith notices. She understands that Dr. Jones did not prefer vaginal delivery, and he did not want to understand the situation. In contrast, Dr. Jones does not seem to have self-control and is upset with all that Ms. Smith proposes. He cannot control his emotions and behaviors.
Empathy is found in the self-awareness concept, which is defined as the conscious understanding of individual feelings and character. Empathy is defined as the ability to feel or understand what a different individual is facing from within their reference frame. It is the ability to place oneself in the position of other individuals. The various empathy types include emotional empathy, cognitive empathy, and somatic empathy. In the case study, Ms. Smith demonstrates the highest emotional self-awareness level. She was not informed that Mrs. Ford had arrived. When she saw the condition of the child, she was concerned and wanted to ensure that the nurses worked to ensure the safe delivery of Mrs. Ford and the dignified death of the child since it was certain that it would not survive even after a safe delivery.
Social awareness includes the capacity to take the perspective and show empathy with other people from different cultures and backgrounds. It is the ability to understand ethical norms and social norms for behavior and the capacity to recognize school, family, and community resources and supports. Service orientation, in this case, is described as the capacity to desire to expect, recognize, and fulfill the needs of others. Such individuals concentrate on the provision of satisfaction and ensuring they remain available to other individuals. Mrs. Smith demonstrates the ability to avail herself to others than Dr. Jones. She sees the condition with Mrs. Ford and is concerned about her delivery process. Dr. Jones is frustrated when he receives a call regarding the C-section. He claims that he needed sleep.
Teamwork and collaboration is a social skill that includes a group of individuals working together to accomplish a given shared goal. Teamwork is a combination of the personal efforts of entire members of a team to complete a goal. The collaboration includes individuals working collaboratively to accomplish a project together. Ms. Smith perceives the situation of the patient as requiring teamwork and collaboration to ensure that the baby and mother were comfortable and the baby had a dignified death. Dr. Jones fails to listen to others, such as Ms. Smith. He does not accept consultation before making any decisions. The situation required collaboration and teamwork to serve the patient, although Dr. Jones did not appreciate it.
