Introduction
When it comes to speech delivery, one has to understand the difference between speaking and talking. Speaking is more formal than talking. There are four main types of speech delivery: manuscript, extemporaneous, memorized, and impromptu speeches. All four types of speeches require good public speaking skills because delivering a speech is neither talking nor reading. The following are tips for delivering excellent verbal and non-verbal speech, as detailed below.
Tips for Delivering a Good Speech to Different Cultures
Verbal Communication
When delivering any of the four mentioned speeches, organization and calmness are vital because the audience perceives every aspect of the listener. Ensure that any material used in the presentation is in proper order and sequence to avoid any confusion. In case you are using notes to back up your speech, let it only be your guide and focus more on conversing rather than reading. Further, expressively use your voice while avoiding unnecessary words such as “um” and “uh.” Ensure you are not monotonous, and your speech is in context with the place and audience (Man, 2017). Finally, be audible enough to the whole audience and make use of variations in inflections and speed.
Non-Verbal Communication
Non-verbal cues complement the verbal to bring out perfection in speech. While delivering the speech, be confident, and use effective body gestures. Rid yourself of distracting actions such as lip biting or chewing. Appropriate facial expression is also crucial since it aids in unraveling the meaning behind the message. Having eye contact with the audience is also useful because, with your eyes, you involve the audience in your presentation. Lastly, dressing and appearance are significant since the audience's first impression is created from appearance.
Importance of Good Speech Delivery Techniques
The ability to communicate offers one the ability to direct, inform, and persuade individuals because a fluent speaker wins the audience's attention (Gillis, 2020). Educators, political leaders, business managers, and military officials must have refined speaking skills to give clear and informative directives. Good communication skills also enhance one's career with numerous benefits, such as increasing an individual’s negotiation and marketing skills. Moreover, it makes one outstanding as the likes of John F. Kennedy and Winston Churchill.
